The value of takedowns

Sort of interesting how much is being put into Edgar getting two takedowns on BJ. Usually they get overlooked in fights if no damage is done with them but all the sudden they matter extra for this fight. BJ was on his back a total of 3 seconds.

I'm one of the guys who thinks takedowns should always count for points even if he don't do major damage before they get up. It still shows an offensive attack. Are people changing their minds on it now?

I don't think BJ lost the fight though. A draw would have been fine.

Well then is 1 takedown > 13 stuffed takedowns?

What about a failed TD in a fight where nothing much is going on? Attempt at an offense that should be rewarded or effective defense that should be rewarded?

It all depends on what else is going on.

I think the reason Edgars takedowns were rewarded is because the judges didn't have much else to go on.

IMO, octagon control should include takedowns/throws/reversals on the ground (or even keeping an active guard that keeps your opponents exclusively defensive), but also if you manage to when keeping the fighter in range on the feet. Problem is that on the feet you'd have to show a clear advantage in striking in order to show that he was in your range but you were not in his (i.e. keep them backpedaling, against the cage).

I also thought that BJ won, but it's not a robbery that he didnt, it was close enough that one could justify a decision both ways. But historically such situations usually go to the defending champ.

If you get a take down and the guy gets right back up without you doing anything to him, the take down shouldn't count for anything

Is pretty simple but again and again you see a guy get one garbage takedown to steal a round, but it really accomplishes nothing

The only thing that matters is "effective" grappling. In the judges opinion, Edgar must have struck and grappled BJ more effectively. I don't think any judge in the world is looking at TDs the way people do on these forums. there are no hard and fast rules about how any particular TDs or stuffed TDs are scored.

While it's said that one must beat the champ to win the belt, fights are scored on a round-by-round basis. Thus, if a round is too close to call, it should be awarded to the champ. Otherwise, the round should be awarded to the fighter who is more effective.

All things being equal, this is like saying one jab that gets through in an otherwise lame round, shouldn't count.

Aggression and octogon control are two of the scoring mechanisms. One successful takedown, no matter how breif shows both of these IMO (although octogon control could be argued).

good post Leigh voted up

The reason they matter is because the striking was virtually dead even. Anything that you can clearly point to and say "this guy did x while his opponent did not" is something that helps you determine which guy won a close round.
