I looked at where each fighter last fought and assigned them to that promotion. All fighters ranked in the men's top 50 (per fight matrix) of their weight class earned their promotion a score of 1.
Where are the worlds top 400 fighters?
UFC 63%
Bellator 10%
WSOF 4%
M1 3%
KSW 3%
Titan 2%
ONE 2%
RFA 1%
Other total 12%
All events listed in "Other total" had less than 1% of the worlds top 400 ranked fighters in their respective promotions.
Other total events included Pancrase, DEEP, VTJ, Superior Challenge, AXS tv, Aspira, The Cage, Pacific FF, Jungle Fight, Shock n Awe, Xtreme fc, Pinnancle, Cage Fury, Eurasian Fight Nights, New, League S-70, Inoki, Legacy, Abu Dhabi Warriors, BAMMA UK, Midwest Cage, Brazilian Fighting Championship, X-Fight MMA, Absolute Burkut, Dragon House, Fight to Win, Gladiator Championship, Road fc, and Warriror Fight Series.
This Really puts today's mma landscape into perspective.
Great list, I appreciate the time you put into it. VU
VU for MMA knowledge.
...The More You Know...
Fightmatrix really is the coolest site out
Update- I now looked at the top 800 male fighters, the top 100 of each weight class.
Where are the world's top 800 fighters?
UFC 49%
Bellator 9%
WSOF 4%
M1 2%
KSW 2%
Titan 2%
ONE 2%
Other total 30%
11 events from the "Other total" category each had 1% of the world's top 800 fights.
Events that have 1% of the world's top 800 fighters include RFA, BAMMA, Jungle Fight, Tachi Palace, Absolute Berkut, Legacy, Pancrase, JVT, DEEP, Road, and Cage Fury.
Although the UFC has half of the worlds top 800 fighters, those fighters the UFC does not have last competed in over 90 different promotions around the world.
cool thread VU

Thanks man, I thought some people here would appreciate the numbers.
The percentages reflect what the bulk of hardcore fans have inferred for a while.
Bellator has actually done a good job of building and acquiring high level talent given they have only held fights for six years.
Awesome thread. VU.
BJ Penn Forever -The data just supports things I have said, this will be good to cite in the future.Primo Interiors - cool thread VU

I dunno about the Bellator numbers, one could ague that WSOF has better fighters than Bellator.
Also UFC numbers are kinda low, if anything they should be much higher considering smaller promotions don't have the best vs best. It's usually 1 dude smashing another in the first round.
Looking at the top 100 per division is pretty useless, as most divisions don't have 100 guys with the innate talent and skills to be a top fighter. Just take a look at the LHW 51-100 range and you will see it is chock full of old-and-busted veterans like Tony Lopez, Trevor Prangley, Jeremy Horn and Houston Alexander. Those guys aren't top fighters anymore. I'd much rather have some unranked but talented youngster on my roster than one of those guys.
Steve4192 -Yeah either a list of the top 30 fighters in each division or a list of the top 50 under 30 in each division.

Thanks and a VU to the OP for putting the list together though.

If you limit the list to, say, the top 20 in each division the UFC looks even more dominant. Even more so if you assign points for rankings (For example, 20 pts for #1 down to 1 pt for #20).
Very cool, thanks for posting. So much for the UFC monopoly.
Having watched them all come and go... Pride, Affliction, WEC, WEF, Strikeforce, Extreme Fighting, Elite XC, IFL, etc...
I'm really interested in seeing how much more top talent Bellator will get over the next couple years.
If Bellator keeps adding top talent it will be like the Pride/UFC days with both promotions putting on high level cards.

I just question how much money Bellator has to spend. One of Zuffa's favorite methods of killing their competition is bidding up veteran fighters on the open market and letting their competitors financially overextend themselves by signing them to fat contracts. The Hendo and Fedor contracts played a large part in killing Strikeforce. Affliction also overextended themselves by paying top dollar for a bunch of veteran fighters. Spending sprees have a history of coming back to bite MMA promoters in the ass in the long-run.
awesome thread. I missed it first time around
