I hadn't seen any UFCs from UFC 3 up to about UFC 40.
Recently I saw UFC 7 and got to see 3 Marco Ruas fights. Previously I had seen Ruas destroy Steve Jennum with strikes from the mount and saw him get destroyed after gassing in Pride 4, but I still didn't know much about him.
A lot of people here really hype him up for his standing and ground skills.
After watching his 3 UFC 7 fights I must say I thought his grappling was very unimpressive.
He got caught in 2 standing guillotines because he leaned forward exposing his neck and in the other fight he couldn't pass Remco Parduel's guard (Remco had the gi on) and looked clueless.
Rickson would have made short work of him back then.
I think you can say that another fighter who was actually fighting top competition back in those days, like a Don Frye or Mark Coleman, would have beaten Ruas.
But Rickson?
Rickson was fighting NOBODY back then. These Rickson worshippers start from the assumption that Rickson would have been able to take advantage of ANY weakness shown by anyone, and then proceed from there. Almost everyone that Ruas beat at 7 would wipe the floor with all of Rickson's lifetime opponents. Ruas has shown, over his career, a willingness to step up against the best. Rickson has not. Rickson had plenty of opportunity to fight Ruas back in those days- he chose not to.
"ruas was the first complete fighter. woulda easily sprawl and brawled any gracie to victory"
First part is definitely true. Second part is just gracie bashing. I think Rickson could've taken him down 10 years ago. I think Rickson could take him down now.
How can you compare Ruas to Rickson? Ruas actually fought real fighters. Rickson fought Japanese tomato cans, like Takada. Rickson would've lost to many of UFC legends including Ruas. I would've loved to seen Rickson vs. Sakuraba or Rickson vs. Frank Shamrock in their prime.
Ruas was fantastic. I loved him in the early UFC shows.
He came in late and was too old once MMA really got rolling. Ruas and Bas were very similar. Great all-around fighters who were way ahead of their times and a little early for big pay-days and real fame.
And Rickson is a myth/ghost. He may have been the best ever, but no one here or anywhere else has any idea if that's true.
Ruas was the first graet MMA FIGHTER. I loved him in the early UFC shows. He won by grappling skills against Cureton a kickboxer bigger, mount and pound Pardoel, and use Muay Thai kicks against the Gigant Varelans.
He was a way ahead of their times and i am sure he can win over Rickson Gracie but i am not surem the grappling skills are better in Gracie.
