Three moves ahead of your opponent

Horseshit. I have never bought that when I heard it said, and continue to not buy it. Maybe I just suck at grappling. Maybe I am no good, but I have never grappled against anyone who I could tell was "two to three moves ahead of me" I think grappling is about reaction to what someone gives you at any given moment, and those who have more skill, and the reaction time to utilize their skill systematically put themselves into the position to land a submission/sweeps/strikes. The "He is three steps ahead of his opponent" schtick is pure bs. Just thought I would throw that out there because it annoys me to no end when I hear someone say it.

It's all about baiting and using setups to get a specific response, which you already have a response for.

Zoo-Zhitsooooo!

Chess

Yeah, it's about having a number of setups which you can switch too - hence being a few steps ahead. Don't really agree with you. If everything you do is being reactive to your opponent, then you're at a disadvantage.

Sometimes you react and get the submission, other times you set him up from the word go...

There are comnbination set ups on the ground similar to stand up. If you are going against a more talented grappler he will have more than one answer for every reaction that you have.

Well darn, I thought I had it all figured out. Now its finally been made clear to me.

I've trained for 10 years and with some real good black belts. There are guys there that seem to be 5 moves ahead...it's not BS, it just sucks when you can't do it. I'm happy enough thinking 2 moves ahead on occasion.

im usually ten to twenty moves ahead of my opponent. i started gaining on him about twenty two years ago, when i began tae kwon do. my master (5th fucking dan) stays 60-80 moves ahead of 99% of the human population, and also of a vast majority of other mammals on this planet.

It's an overused saying but it is real. I'd even say that if you've been grappling a while, you're probably already doing it unconsciously. Think about it. There are certain things your opponent can do and you already know in advance what you'll do to counter, and actions that stem from those actions that you probably already know what you'll do as well, and so on.

Thanks

well thats the thing...we cant both be three steps ahead of each other.

Its not Horseshit...
Its what helped me in my Judo and Jiujitsu career..
In Judo I had a Uchimata Switch, to a back throw, then to Uchimata.
Either one, two, or the third one would work.

I take the statement as a reference to using combinations...

See Rickson for examples of what I mean. He had that sixth sense about what you are going to do next and has many different moves for each thing you do...

It's constantly changing environment so you may go for one move and have to change what 2 and 3 were supposed to be.

"Sometimes you react and get the submission, other times you set him up from the word go..."

Yes, everyone has to acknowledge they know this.

Sometimes, you get shit on your first attempt/attack.

Other times, you set up and/or bait and then take whatever your opp gives you from there.

Other times, you react and, whats that word, oh, yeah, "counter."

"Well darn, I thought I had it all figured out. Now its finally been made clear to me"

OOOOkay, so what is the point of this thread? You said that is all BS that your opponent can be 3 moves ahead of you. Then myself and a couple other people point out that there are set ups just like stand up, and that YES, your opponent can be 2-3 moves ahead of you. Then you fire back with sarcasm; you bascially contradicted yourself.

I didn't want to sound SARCASTIC or like a dick when I made my first post, but the first thought that came to mind was if you have to ponder the the topic of this thread or if you think it is BS then you must not be that well rounded on the ground. I don't have to have a green name to figure that out or know something about the ground.

BTW, I am glad that I could clear that up for you!
