Tim Sylvia: Explain why he isn't good any more

Not too much of a Tim Sylvia fan when it comes to him fighting Arlovski, Big Nog, or Fedor, but tell me this:

If you are one of the people who talks about what a joke Tim is or how bad of a fighter he is now, defend your statement with a clear and valid reason.

In any point of Tim's career, I find it safe to assume that he'd find the same lack of success when going toe to toe with an aging Ex-Pro Boxing World Champion, given the times he's been rocked by Arlovski or Couture, both not even close to being able to hang with a Pro boxer.

So, if it's safe to assume that a pro boxer has much better boxing than an MMA fighter like Tim, which is painfully obvious, wasn't that just more of a shitty strategy?

Next, you can say he's not good for losing to Fedor. Most credible publications rank him at #1, and with no losses in a decade, one can't find a valid argument for a loss to Fedor making you a joke, unless you're a complete troll.

Losing to Big Nog? Well, he kicked Big Nog's ass for 2 rounds until he was submitted in the 3rd. Where is the weakness in losing to the then #2 Heavyweight when you actually put up a great fight against him?

Losing to Couture? Well, Couture did finish Chuck before he went on a large 7 fight win streak that included to finishes over Couture. Nobody considered Chuck a joke then.

I can't think of one single instance in which anybody could conclude that Tim isn't a great fighter or a world class fighter from any of this, unless you just hate Tim.

His back was fucked for the Couture fight and after he got it fixed Randy wouldn't rematch Tim because he knew the score

 I don't think he's bad at all.

Dude's had some tough matches with Randy Couture and Fedor.....hardly embarassing to lose to those guys.

Coming out of shape and getting hammered by Mercer kinda sucked but he can bounce back.

I'm a Sylvia fan, much to the dismay of my friends. His style is a little awkward and I think that's where a lot of the hate comes from. He's not built like Lesnar, quick like Mir, technical like Nog, or classy like Couture and people mock him for that. He's got a pretty solid record though. Besides Mercer, he hasn't lost to anyone not in the top 10.

I do think his best days are behind him due to the skillset of the "new" heavyweight division though. He can't handle the BJJ of Mir or Nog and he can't handle the wrestling of Velasquez or Lesnar. I'm still a fan though because he simply hasn't given up. All of the hate and jokes at his expense and the guy just shrugs it off and calls Monte for another fight. That's pretty cool in my book...

I don't know man, he almost KO'd Nog and was winning that fight up until he got subbed in the third and taking out Ricco Rodriguez was no small feet.

He made a very bad decision against Mir.....but I still think Mir wins more fights than he loses to Tim.

Sylvia is always dangerous.

Also, being in Alabama can derail ANYONES career. That entire state is like a Bermuda Triangle to the human soul...

cue Dueling Banjos

poopyface you must be kidding if you think that arloski or randy could hang with a pro boxer an a boxing match..

He's hell on his feet for sure but once the fight goes to the ground it's like he's learning to swim for the first time in the deep end of the pool. Yeah, he almost KO'd Nog but once it hit the ground it was over in seconds. I do give him props for not getting subbed by Monson when they fought but, again, it was due to his stand up and reach that he was able to wear Monson down and stay out of any subs.

Sylvia seems more frail and weak to me recently. Is his back really completely healed? He was always awkward physically, but in the past he looked quicker and more powerful IMO. I can't imagine him throwing an effective head kick these days, but I could be wrong.

all your son are disappoint to us - he shits himself and proudly rides a scooter only J.D can ride a scooter and pull it off

Try fighting with diarrhea against top fighter, and win. Then describe your experience

No, please don't describe your experience...that's where Big Tim went wrong.

First I think he fought in a thin UFC HW division.

He had some great wins in his prime (Ricco, AA, Vera and Monson). Like many others the game passed him and his camp by quickly.

Today's HWs are too fast, too well rounded and in much better shape than Tim ever was.

The Mercer loss was a fluke imo. I look at him as a former top fighter who can't compete with today's generation of HWs.

He should get in shape and fight others at his level.

He could still beat up a lot of the heavyweights who are being hyped these days

unfallenstar -  He'd destroy Cain who UFC is currently trying to push hard.

LOL, okay.

he belongs in UFC, so does Ricco.

Velazquez would maul him. Strong wrestling and BJJ are his kryptonite. I think he'd beat Struve and Buentello though, Kongo would be a good fight and I'd like to see him against Mir again. The outcome would be the same, but I'd like to see it happen anyway after the way their first fight went down. Anyone that willing to fight with a shattered arm deserves a rematch.

"Arlovski or Couture, both not even close to being able to hang with a Pro boxer."

Sorry if the wording was confusing. I meant that both fighters aren't even close to being able to hang with a pro boxer, aka they'd get their asses handed to them. Hope that clarifies it.

BurnBabyBurn - I'm a Sylvia fan, ...

So you're the one.

I agree with pretty much everyone else who says that the sport has passed him and his team by. He's just too one dimensional. Also agree that he ruled the division when it was it's thinnest and ruled it with his size.

I also think he hasn't been the same in a long time. (probably pre-post back surgery)

catomoran - he just dominated a good up and comer in his last fight

he is A-level fighter always been

mercer fight was a fluke

How was it a fluke?
Tim's gameplan wasn't to go for a takedown and work for the submission.
He wanted that fight to show his boxing skill and as a warm up for a potential boxing career.
