Tim Sylvia came under fan fire over the weekend for his performance vs. Andrei Arlovksi.

After a solid first round, Sylvia faded some in the second, and was caught with two brutal straight rights, which dropped him.

Arlovski followed up with two soccer kicks, before the referee indicated he could as required under One FC's unusual rule set. Sylvia was unable to continue and the bout was declared a No Contest, in a further highly unusual step (ordinarily an intentional foul that results in a fighter being unable to continue means the fight is decided in favor of the injured party).

The fans who wished Sylvia had kept fighting have never been soccer kicked in the face by Andrei Arlovski.

While not always a huge fan favorite, Tim Sylvia has earned the respect of Pat Miletich, one of the greatest trainers in MMA history, who had a unique window onto Sylvia's development.

"I'll tell you what," said Miletich. "Of all guys on the planet who were not physically gifted by God... that guy was great. When Tim was training with us, when he moved out from Maine, I would watch him try to jump rope, and he'd literally almost break down in tears because he couldn't do it.

"I'd look at Hughes and Pulver and those guys and say, 'I just don't have the heart to tell this guy to go back to Maine. He's trying so damned hard.'

"He stuck with it, and ended up winning the heavyweight world title. I would say that Tim is the poster child for over-achievement. If there's anybody out there that doubts themselves, take a look at the belief that Tim Sylvia had in himself. He won a world title, and that's pretty impressive."

Wise words from one of the legends of the sport.

Tim's the poster child for what a champion looks like when the talent pool is ankle deep.

Is it really overachieving when his greatest wins were Arlovski and Vera? Come on now. Phone Post

awesome quote

kanodogg3 -

Militech a tad biased in this regard. Let's not act like Tim wasn't physically gifted, yeah he's no super athlete but he's huge, and was able to parlay that gift into a world title when ufc hws were mostly lhw sized.

He used steroids in his heyday as well, and his recent performances/physique shows that he is not an overachiever by far.

That said I mean no hate, mad props for him for being able to do what he did Phone Post

Outside of Couture and Vera, which of Sylvia's opponents in the UFC were LHW-sized?

GSP24 - Tim Sylvia PROVED that you don't have to be an amazing athlete to become a legend in this sport. Hard work and dedication can over come.

Nice words by Pat. Not easy to gain that much respect from him.

Legend? Do you ever make sense? Phone Post

5 UFC championship belts in his possession. That's legend worthy, for me.

He was a champ because the best were fighting in Pride at that time. Still he did well, he beat Ricco easily for the belt and at that time Ricco was no joke at all.

Smith1234 - Sure, Tim has had ups and downs. I choose to remember the Tim that did the following:

killed Ricco

had a ridiculous come back KO in a HW title fight against Arlovski

wanted to fight mir with his arm broken

KOed Telligman with a high kick and was the only time I can remember a guy getting taken out of UFC on a stretcher and a major delay in the card

was killing Nog on the feet in what was a huge fight at the time before he got caught

beat down Monson and survived on the ground against the ADCC champ (all the talk was how Monson would kill him if it went to the ground, who AT THE TIME was riding a long win streak and highly regarded as a bad matchup for Tim

 Tim almost triangled Monson.

god every one loves to hate him but the fact is he achieved more at HW in the UFC than many others. He fought legit competition when it was there to fight and who did he duck?! no one.
Kind of crazy but because he isn't a body beautiful no one can seem to accept he is a damn solid hw

As the saying goes "Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard". I was never a fan of Tim, but he was a champion in the most prestigious MMA organization. Regardless of how deep the division was at the time, he was the best they had and will always have my respect because of it.

LOL, always thought it was funny that posters with these kinds of s/n's ALWAYS seems to make disrespectful posts.
Which is funny, because they seem to permanently have their foot in their mouth no matter what.

LOL, thought the same thing.

Um, he is almost 7' tall. We're not talking about someone with absolutely no physical gifts. Phone Post
