Tom Atencio is such a liar=)

Officials confirm cancellation of "Affliction: Trilogy," loss of main event cited as reason

Just a few hours after news broke of the event's cancellation, Affliction Entertainment executives have officially confirmed "Affliction: Trilogy" has been scrapped.

According to Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio, the show was scrapped because of the loss of headliner Josh Barnett, who failed a drug test administered by the California State Athletic Commission and was denied a license to fight Fedor Emelianenko on Aug. 1.

Atencio said that, despite the number of fighters willing to fill in for Barnett, the one-year-old promotion couldn't promote a main event "to our standards," but the company is committed to promoting future shows.

"Finding an opponent for the No. 1 ranked MMA heavyweight champion in such a short period of time was a huge endeavor, and I'm thrilled at the amount of fighters willing to take on this challenge," Atencio stated. "But in the end, we just didn't have enough time to promote a new fight to our standards."

Brett Rogers, Jeff Monson, Vitor Belfort, Don Frye, "King" Mo Lawal and Paul Buentello were among the fighters who openly campaigned for the slot on the pay-per-view card. However, none would have the drawing power of Barnett, and a source close to Showtime PPV, which is Affliction's pay-per-view partner, told MMAjunkie.com www.mmajunkie.com) it's a major reason the show was canceled.

Executives from the show's co-promoter, M-1 Global, are flying into Anaheim, Calif., today. An additional announcement from the Russian-based promotion could be made later today that could give information about Emelianenko's next fight. It's possible, of course, some of the "Trilogy" fighters could be shifted to M-1's Aug. 28 card, which takes place in Los Angeles as the first event of the company's newly launched "premium fight series."

Meanwhile, fans who purchased tickets for "Trilogy," which was set to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, are told to contact Ticketmaster for refunds.

For those thinking (and even hoping) that the cancellation would signal the demise of Affliction, today's announcement seems to hint otherwise.

"Affliction is deeply disappointed that the undercard is also canceled through no fault of its own," the release stated. "Affliction stands behind the company's brands and delivers premium products to the most passionate and loyal customers. Affliction's first priority is to ensure that all future events live up to the company's high standards."

FLAF is just trying to spin like the master, Cindy. You, of all people, should be see that.

At least he didn't swear, which seems unusually classy in the world of mixed martial arts promoters.

I wish him luck.

Affliction folds MMA promotion, will sponsor UFC

After promoting two critically acclaimed but financially disastrous mixed martial arts cards, Affliction on Friday first canceled its pay-per-view card scheduled for Aug. 1 and then opted to get out of the promotional business, Yahoo! Sports has learned.

The company and the Ultimate Fighting Championship are expected to release a statement sometime on Friday in which it is announced that Affliction will cease operations as a promoter and that its clothing division will become a UFC sponsor.

Affliction had a card slated for Aug. 1 with a main event of Fedor Emelianenko, the No. 2 fighter in the Yahoo! Sports mixed martial arts rankings, against former UFC champion Josh Barnett at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

But Barnett tested positive for an anabolic steroid and on Tuesday was denied a license to fight by the California State Athletic Commission.

That left Affliction scrambling to fight a replacement for Emelianenko. With no viable alternatives – the best was former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort, who was already down to 195 pounds for a scheduled middleweight fight – Affliction early Friday opted to scrap the show.

Later in the day, Affliction came to terms on a deal in which it would quit promoting fight cards. However, the status of the fighter contracts belonging to Affliction is unknown.

Andddd boom goes the dynamite.

...he doesn't need your luck,he needs Dana...yea he exudes class and humility in his desire to make more money off his sweat shop T-shirts

Isn't there another article out there saying they're working on a merger with Srikeforce?

Dana's been shown to lie/change his mind on numerous other occasions. There's nothing new under the sun.

I met Tom in Biloxi at Ultimate Chaos. Whatever his business faults might be, he's a swell guy.

I wish him luck, too.

Apparently, yes. Kevin Iole reported this fell apart.

He had "good intentions" when he got into this thing 2 years ago. Now? Hell no. I think it sucks that the reason he is giving is ALL Josh Barnett. Had he gotten injured instead of popped for roids would the card have been canceled? There were substitutions-- folks crawling out of the woodwork to step up.

Tom was a piss poor leader and this is simply another example. Every mistake he made lead to yesterday, not Josh getting popped. He weakened the company and made it vulnerable to exactly what happened-- closing up shop and selling T-Shirts at UFC events again. Idiot.

Cindy

...long live Dana, hes all we got

Nothing wrong with trying to save face. We all understand that you dislike other promotions Cindy. If you were in Tom's position, what would you do? At least they tried putting fights together that the fans wanted to see and to be honest, Affliction two fight cards were awesome.

i was trying bad to get the fight also.....

The Guy That KO'd Kimbo -  i was trying bad to get the fight also.....

I would have bought that PPV.

edit

Tom hasn't done any more lying, backstabbing that Dana White hasn't done 100x over. We don't even know the extent of his.

unity - cindy o takes such unabashed glee and enjoyment in watching mma promotions fold and cancelling their awesome card

cindy o = dana white in drag
Shouldn't you be busy posting a redacted and corrected story on which steroid JB popped positive for?
