Took my first BJJ class yesterday, any advice?

I have been talking about starting BJJ for about a year. Something always put me off, nerves or maybe plan laziness I'm not quiet sure. Or maybe because I'm thirty two and starting late I thought it might be pointless. Anyway yesterday I took the jump and decided to stop talking and just do it.

I really enjoyed the class and the guys and girls were extremely nice and really helpful. So I made this thread because I want to ask help on a few things. I'm a bit nervous rolling with the girls because I'm a lot bigger than them, it just makes me a little bit apprehensive. They have a lot more skills so I'm sure it doesn't bother them but it's something that's in my head.

Second my body is so sore and nearly seized up is there any advice on anything I can do outside of stretches maybe a silly question but I stretched before and after and when I woke this morning I could barley move :D

Thirdly is there anyway I can learn the techniques outside of the class when alone? I mean outside watching videos. Also I seem to have trouble also with locking in holds because my legs are either too big or not flexible enough. Just can't seem to get the foot down behind my knee.

Anyways any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in adanve :)
Hopefully I'll stick it out because I genuinely loved the class and need a bit of structure in my life.

just keep showing up and take care if your stretching.
but keep. showing up. Phone Post 3.0

Keep doing it, keep your arms tucked and master the hip escape. Phone Post 3.0

I will do guys thanks. I'm hoping to keep it up as a hobby as hopefully help to lose a bit of weight. I'll keep stretching and I'll ask about the going over the hip escape. Thanks again.

And you'll be sore for the first couple of weeks until you get used to it. You're doing things you've never done before.

32 ain't that old anyway. Didn't Joe Rogan only start grappling when he was 30? Now he's a black belt. Phone Post 3.0

Knee elbow escape!
Don't use strength yet
Arms close to body at all times
Don't give up your back
Use weight and leverage top your advantage

3 out of 5 pieces of advice involve bathing....ring worm a few times? Phone Post 3.0

Thanks guys. All solid advice and I appreciate all of ye taking the time to comment. Seems to just be a case of keep going and don't worry when it clicks it clicks. I plan on going as often as I can but how many times a week would ye reccomend? I'll go every time I'm free just wondering really. I don't want to be a world beater but I'd like to get the swing of it anyway.

Got it last week on my face and had a date the next night. Sucks. Phone Post 3.0

Remember to breathe and relax. Try and control your breathing while training. Deep breathes In through the nose, out through the mouth.

Try not to be a spaz, or go crazy by trying to out muscle guys (especially girls).

Don't be afraid to tap.

BRING WATER.

Wash your gi and shower really well before for consideration and after with defense soap immediately after training.

Cardio goes a long way in jiu-jitsu. Try and hit runs or do sprints to build it up.

Clip your nails.

Don't hurt anyone.

Have fun! Keep us posted on how you're doing! Phone Post 3.0

Don't ask to learn any berimbolo, mantis guard, inverted de la riva, etc. Best advice is pay attention when they show technique and rep it as long as the instructor wants you to. A lot of guys get caught up in the comradery and end up chit chatting through drilling. Also try and go at least 2-3x a week. Phone Post 3.0

Everyday. Then start doing two a days in a couple weeks if you can. I take Sundays off and only train once on Saturday.

I didn't get the nickname Layzie because it sounded cool, ok? If I can do it, you can.

If I can give you one piece of advice as cliche as it sounds, but leave your ego at the door and manage your expectations.

Have seen a lot of white belts come in, most of them athletic looking, they'll come in and get tooled by someone smaller, never to be seen again. Don't be that guy. Phone Post 3.0

Train as much as you can. I'm like layzie. ..my off days are cardio and grappling dummy work. You can get pretty decent in a year, if you go hard Phone Post 3.0

Are you doing No-Gi at the moment? If so, do you intend to train in a Gi at some point?

I always enjoyed repping a few techniques then coming back home, going on youtube or looking through a few instructionals I'd downloaded and watching their way of doing a certain submission or sweep and then figure out what would work out best for me or just in general. Helped me with a lot tremendously.

Remember its just training, don't act like you're in a tournament and go crazy in rolling. Always try to be considerate to other people in your class, never crank anything to hard or hold anything past the first tap, it doesn't help you're development aswell as theirs if you're rolling with injured teammates.

And the most important one is, just have fun man.

Haha I don't know what any of those are, so no fear of me asking to learn those :D. I just plan on doing what I'm told and shown, start from the bottom and work my way up. Thanks.

Re: soreness and cramping - take magnesium.

We're basically ALL deficient in it and it helps, trust me! Phone Post 3.0
