Yes. Jan 2012 at a tournament, last match of the day of course. Knew something wasn't right when I couldn't put on my hoodie without help. Had the surgery the end of Feb. Got into rehab about week 1/2 later and they said I was weeks ahead of schedule as far as range of motion etc goes. Got back to BJJ in late April, did a tournament the 2nd week of May and didn't miss a beat. Shoulder always bothered me in day to day BJJ and lifting. I ended up tearing it again later that year.
I'm pretty young, what's your age OP? Certainly makes a difference.
So that's my cool story bro, here's my advice.
Work hard in rehab, if you lift weights then continue to do some of the useful exercises from rehab.
Take it slow in BJJ, tell teammates to watch the bad shoulder.
Get yourself on some kind of prescription anti-inflammatory
Almost 39, spurs, collar bone damage too
I had the surgery about 6-7 years ago. I kinda dislocated my shoulder in a freak accident and walked around with it like that for a few months. When it finally popped back into place I went to the Dr and was told I had a torn labrum.
The surgery went well, I think I was back to training (JKD) in a few months. Felt kind of weird first time, I think I went back too soon but I was trying to be aggressive.
Once it heals, you have to be conscious about the attention you give it. I think mine if fully healed, don't have any problems, but I do notice sometimes that it's a little weaker than it should be, sometimes.
I'm 40 now and this happened in my mid 30's.
Tore it along with a shoulder separation in 1986 wrestling in college. Opted to not have surgery. Went through intensive physical therapy. I'm now 46. No arthritis, no problems. I recommend the rehab route unless it is a complete tear. Pace yourself, do all of the PT and do not rush the return. Be careful initially when you are rolling, lifting, etc. and pick partners carefully. If you take the time (no ego pushing you to go faster than you should) you will come back stronger and better then you were before. Focus on long term health and long term results.
I'm a brown belt and teach so wasn't keen to take the time off but looks like I have little option
Tore my labrum 2 years ago. I did physical therapy for about 6 months, and started doing BJJ/ wrestling again after about 4 months. I probably should have waited longer, I almost re-tore it one practice when someone sprawled on a takedown attempt. I had pain occasionally in my shoulder for about a year, but now I don't feel anything. I lost some of my range of motion but otherwise my shoulder is completely healed. Be diligent about your PT and tap early whenever someone targets that shoulder.
i had the op in 2009 on my right shoulder & was not back on the mats till the next year. Its 95% healed up now.
Got ny purple in 2012 & then injured my left shoulder the next month. SLAP tear, cyst, rotator cuff.
Im waiting to get the surgery this time. It was seriously painful...especially the first 2 weeks after. Im not looking fwd to it.
Had this about 4 years ago. I lifted and trained on a torn labrum for at least a year. The doc didn't know how my shoulder didn't dislocate, but I needed 6 anchors. Pain was awful for weeks. Had to have help getting dressed.
Did my pt for 2-3 months and got back in the gym and bjj. I've never been the same strengthwise but I have no more pain issues. Mobility isn't quite the same, but I've felt much better And I'm glad I had it done
The only time I remember it popping was like 5 years before I had it checked out. So it could've been torn that whole time and just got progressively worse.
It just started burning all the time, my neck always hurt, and my shoulder just started making crunching noises when lifting.
anyone did swimming again after a labrum tear?
