Train here, or not?

A new MMA gym opened up in my town. They also teach TMA's as well.

But I have heard rumors that the MMA he's teaching is from UFC tapes he watches, then teaches the next day! This is the only MMA type of place in my town, and I can't afford to travel to other gym's out of town to train.

Here's the question...I usually wouldn't train at this place, but then again, that little training is better than no training.

Should I, or should I not train there. Maybe check it out for a month, then play it by ear. Maybe talk with the guy about this rumor?

If he's not at least a:

BB blue belt

or

Judo black belt

or

Golden Glove boxer

or

Semi pro MT fighter

or

a ex HS and college wrestler

I wouldn't waste my time. I'm a former Gloden Glove boxer, I teach boxing now, but I wouldn't pretend to teach mma.

Sounds like the "MMA" gym by me. Some guy won a couple toughman's which I guess qualifies him to teach MMA?

imho ..really y waste ur time n money ....for him to "train" u....u would be just as good on ya own buying ufc tapes n incorporating the learnings urself..

aside from his background in tma i would just learn that...then again i question his legitness as well...did he really obtain the teaching credentials of his tma skills??? or as that also from George Dillman tapes.

i understand ur dillemma th bro n it sux u have a opportunity to train and at the same time u 2nd guessing this guy.

if this guy was at least a judo low level/or bluebelt bjj level of capacity i would go for it . i have been trained and learn from decent bluebelts...(matt "the prowler" fowler) as one of them who were serious badasses. the reason i say this is i would gather u r trying to get into mma to some degree urself or aspects of it.
him being tma is not gonna to get u into the mode of mma minset since it doesnt incorporate ground fighting and realistic striking.

seeing videos is only goin to get u so far (not very at that) as well as seeing and DOING is 2 diff things

however being as he is ur only option for now, drop by the place n see what he has to offer n take it with a grain of salt.

if they don't give you a free class don't bother

O and I'd go the "or not" route. Look around there has to be something in driving distance. I drive 130 miles round trip to train.

also what taybes said ..see if there is a free intro class or 2 to get a feel of whats what.

samsonite--

post this on the bjj forum as well =)
