Trump: "Arrest anyone who destroys monument"

President Donald Trump said he "authorized" the federal government to "arrest anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the U.S."

Trump also wrote the offense would be punishable with up to 10 years in prison.

"I have authorized the Federal Government to arrest anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the U.S. with up to 10 years in prison, per the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act, or such other laws that may be pertinent.....

"This action is taken effective immediately, but may also be used retroactively for destruction or vandalism already caused. There will be no exceptions!" he wrote on Twitter on Tuesday morning.

His comments come as protesters against police brutality and systemic racism have called for statues and other monuments of historical figures with ties to racism or slavery to be taken down.

In the most recent instance, protesters tried to pull down a monument of Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, in a park near the White House on Monday evening.

Police eventually intervened, but protesters still had managed to climb atop the statue and tie ropes around Jackson and his horse in an attempt to bring it down from its base, which was spray-painted with the word "killer."

Trump cited the Veterans Memorial Preservation or "such other laws that may be pertinent" to enforce the arrests.

One section of the act states that a person who willfully injures or destroys veteran memorials -- or attempts to do so -- shall be fined and/or imprisoned no more than 10 years.

This rampant vandalism and destroying of historical statues and records has grown to be an everyday occurrence and it should not be tolerated.

I don’t see a problem with this. Vandalizing and destroying monuments and memorials is criminal. If you have issue with them there are legal means to address those issues. He isn’t making up laws but actually enforcing them. Which is the role of the executive branch.

If they want a statue removed, the city council or whoever has the authority can vote on it.

Those fucking idiots vandalized a Stevie Ray Vaughn statue.
They probably thought he was some southern plantation owner.

They're being used, and they don't even know it.

Fuck normalizing criminal behavior.

100% this.

There is no room for tolerance of such behavior in a civilized society.

Were police not authorized to arrest people destroying Government property before?

yes but its 2020 and so if you cry enough and burn down enough buildings, the laws will not be enforced by the idiot politicians who value political expediency and pandering to adult children before the rule of law and order.

even the destruction of the confederate ones was a bad idea IMO.  don't like them, they should be taken down and put in museums where they can serve as a record of who we were and with the appropriate context.
