It does look bad that republicans were on the OG crying about the EC weeks before the election, and also doesn't look that hot that Trump was crying about it 4 years ago and it worked in his favor vs. popular vote.
That said, liberals can't cry about the popular vote because the system is not setup to take it into account. Take me for example, I voted for Darrel Castle because I live in NJ which I knew was going to Hillary. If it was based on a national popular vote, I would have voted for Trump because I think Hillary is an evil, piece of shit.

I believe the electoral college serves a valuable purpose, but I wouldn't mind seeing it reformed to eliminate the 'winner take all' system.
Winner take all disenfranchises minority voters (political minorities, not racial minorities) and suppresses voter turnout. A liberal in Little Rock has no incentive to vote for president because no matter how he votes, Arkansas belongs to the Republicans. Same goes for a conservative in Utica. No matter how he votes, New York belongs to the Democrats. So those Arkansas liberals and New York conservatives stay home.
I'd prefer to see a system where electoral votes are apportioned by Congressional districts rather than by state. So that liberal in Little Rock has a good chance of sending an Arkansas electoral vote to the Democrats (because Little Rock is a dot of blue in a sea of red) and that Utica conservative has a chance of sending a New York electoral vote to the Republicans (because upstate New York is mostly red). They suddenly have skin in the game, whereas under the current system they do not.
