One of my (adult) kids had a twitter account hacked. Are there investigative steps that can be taken separate of the Police? Anyway to find the chuckle-hut that did it?

There are ways of social engineering the identity. What I would do is host an image on a web-server on your system. Get a dyndns address for your server so the URL looks semi-legit. Send the link of the image in a private message to the twitter account with a message that doesn’t make it look obvious that you are phishing them.
Then just wait, and keep checking your web-servers access logs with the image’s name in the search. If they click on it, their ip address will be listed. After that, do what you wish.
The account got hacked and sent out racist messages to a black guy in TX. Just bizarre. I am trying to figure out who hacked.
