I believe that bjj has gone in three directions: 1. Sporting gi/Judo . Self defense/mma 3. No gi/wrestling
I think to be the well rounded you need all three. However I see many schools specialize and end up neglecting the other two or one
i do 1 and 2 mostly... almost a 50/50 split.
i agree. you need both.
I see it a little bit differently.
1. Sport
2. Self-Defense
3. Vale Tudo
But you're right. Most people aren't proficient in all three.
I think you're probably right. I guess it's just hard to be good at all three aspects when time is limited. You can be decent at all three,or good at one or two

for SD, how much to you have to train to beat an untrained opponent?
if you are training gi, how many times a week do you need to train nogi?
Its not about time as much as proficiency
I tried 1 and 2,but 3 is where I found a fit.
I do gi jiu jitsu, gi putasos, and no gi putasos. not sure what self defense or wrestling is.
I can honestly say that I feel I am versed in all.
Wrestled for 5 years before I started BJJ and my wrestling now is probably 10x better (been practicing my wrestling during the additonal 12 years of BJJ)
Compete a lot in gi and no-gi tournaments...placed and won in advanced and higher level gi and no-gi comps...Also do the best I can do stay current in the sport.
Also studied a lot of Judo...for a good part of my training one of my old instructors Edson Carvalho required us to do tons of Judo...but a big thing that I studied was the grip fighting game.
Self-Defense - I actually have a very big passion for this...almost to the point where I get worked up when people talk about it hahaha...one of the few times...This is for sure my weakest area, and the main thing I attribute this to is because I will NEVER know what it's like to truly have to defend myself and others in a real life situation unless it really happens. I believe it's impossible to mimic true self-defense situations and the adrenaline involved. But I analyze and study this topic often.
Either way I love it all!
My school offers Gi and no gi, Vale Tudo/MMA, Self Defense, and Muay Thai
Currently I am engaged in Gi BJJ and Muay Thai. Eventually I'll move into No Gi and then put it all together for the MMA.
It will take some time since I only get 3 days a week to train.
gi + no-gi + self defense = jiu-jitsu.
Jiu-jitsu + takedowns + striking style = MMA
Just my thoughts..... :)
I started carlson Gracie (sperry) and later moved Helio. (my coach left and my current professor under royler arrived) We cover all 3 till bluebelt in our system then people specialize .
It's more effective and more fun !
