Anybody train at UCLA? What classes, and how did you like them?
I didn't go to UCLA and have no first hand experience with their martial arts rec programs. But from what I hear their muay thai club is halfway decent. Its run by a couple guys who know what they're doing and the club does some sparring. If you have no other training I highly doubt that it'll make you a fighter, but it is a good opportunity for free/very cheap training and a few bodies to move around with.
I'm a USC alumni myself. The MA rec programs at SC were a complete joke. They actually had a Dux Ninjitsu club, lol.
Don't forget the Vietnamese Karate Program run by an extra/stunt man from the Power Rangers, at USC. :)
Max
I train at UCLA. I don't take the Muay Thai, but there is a brazilian jiu-jitsu class. The instructor is good, but the problem is class length/frequency. I'm used to training 5x/week at my old machado academy, but classes here are offered 3x/week, and are about an hour and fifteen minuites to two hours long. It's a real steal, only 45 bucks a quarter. I'd say go for it.
Hey Maverick, do you know anyplace in the area to watch Pride/UFC?
I may have a place to watch it next year when I get an apartment, but as of now, no. I usually have to hear about it on the UG or look for fight clips online.
Yeah LOL @ the Vietnamese karate thing. Geez the damn Bruins get bjj and muay thai and what did we have at USC? Power Rangers and Dux Ryu. Pretty sad. It would've been nice to have training on campus. I had to ride my bike up Figeroa all the time to train at the boxing gym =(
Thats right! You trojans better bow down!
When I was in grad school at USC they had 2 JKD
instructors under Dan Inosanto teaching there --
Jun Fan, Kali, Silat and Muay Thai. It was
awesome. That's what introduced me to MMA and
non-traditional MA.
I remember the Dux Ninja people. What was even
funnier than them were the Hwa RAng Do classes.
"you jackson? you look like jackson?"
Trojans, you guys had two Gokor bluebelts and Kru Chai teaching Muay Thai on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays three years ago. It was one of hte best kept secrets. Plus, all the classes were free!
Hey Maverick, is the UCLA BJJ club still affiliated with Rickson's? I was a
member when it formed years ago. It all started with a Rickson
seminar at UCLA sometime around UFC 3 or 4 maybe
If I am correct, it was taught by Aron Riley(Briley?) who was a JJ Machado brown belt. We're now taught by Japa who is a black belt who I believe is associated with Carlson Gracie.
you're correct, in the past it was taught by Aaron Briley and Niko Han when I was in school. i don't know how it is now, but back then it was great a deal to be trained by them and for such a low price.
aaron used to train with rickson if its the same kid.. black kid yeh?
lol @ westwood high!
japa is the bjj coach there right now and he is good. there are a couple of blue belts who train there. for muy thai, joseph is a good coach, and his class is legit, not just cardio kickboxing.
lol @ westwood high!
I wish I had trained in any martial art at SC vs spending hours playing hoop upstairs at the Lyon center. I thought about studying Dux Ninjitsu in 1991 but I thought "What are they rolling around on the floor for?"
Back in 2000, Rickson had some people from his camp doing some BJJ classes, they were really cheap too. Anybody go to the reggae festival yesterday? It was the shit, everyone was blowing trees...
