UFC 1 and UFC 2

Just rented / watched the 2 DVD's. It was amazing to re-watch the
beginning of the sport. A few observations / questions:

1)Royce walked through both tournaments (UFC 1 & 2). I have heard
that the whole UFC concept was in fact just an infomercial for Gracie Jiu
Jitsu in the USA. If so it was a brilliant way of introducing the sport to
America. However what is the truth behind this?

2) Ken Shamrock: I give him credit for sticking with the sport for so
many years, however surprised that after witnessing the future of the
game (bjj) he didn't dive into it. As recent as TUF3 he says "I don't
train BJJ".

3) The other exotic styles (like 5 animal kung fu, ninja, etc.). These
were the styles that most people in the USA looked at as the best in
martial arts...probably because of how stylish they looked without an
opponent. However, once in the ring or octagon against another
person, the styles crumbled into windmill punches. So...why do they
still exist after being proven totally flashy yet completely ineffective?

Discuss...

1: all true

2: ken was and still is a submission fighter. prettymuch the same thing as bjj.

3: people who do those exotic styles dont get in fights, so its easy to keep believing it still works. if they saw the ufc theyd say "well the deadly techniques werent permitted"

^^^true^^^and funny
