UFC decision outcomes trending in the wrong direction

Scroll down a bit to look at the “percentages” aspect.

You will notice there’s a significant steady increase in the # of decision wins in UFC.

That’s not good. Fans do not like decisions. Fans like clarity, and obviously fans like BLOOD!!

Change needs to be thought about immediately. The entire system needs to be changed completely imo. Why is it that the best fighters, once they establish themselves as the best, start fighting less? That’s not a good system. You want to watch the best fight more, not less.

Instead of a win bonus make it a finish bonus

Last round should be infinite until one gets KO, Subbed or Dada 5000’d

That’s a great way to simplify the current system.

I proposed a system where every Jan 1st starts a new “mma” season. Every year, top 16 fighters fight each other. The winner at the end of the year, will have fought 4 times, and more than likely will have had 4 finishes. You can expand past the 16 top guys by adding in alternative fighters for replacements as injuries are inevitable. Every year, you can say “such and such was the 2021 x-division champion”. If someone can be a repeated champion, it would be way more impressive than a current champion defending his belt once or twice a year.

But, your “finish bonus” would for sure help the current system which I feel is broken.

I probably would go full on finish bonus instead of win. But 50% to show, 25% to win, 25% to finish would be good

You might as well just tell the women you’re docking them 25% pay then though. Have you got separate graphs for these stats for men and women in the UFC? The women must bring it down quite significantly

Good point about wmma

2 things I noticed- ufc doubled events in 2006 and 1999 was a hell of a year

I like decisions.

I like a close fight.

Snoozeman at his snoozey best is my favourite. I seriously love a foot stomp.

Looks like the decision rate has stayed around 50% for 10 years. I don’t see a trend here at all. I see a leveling out.

Reasons for more finishes the early days:
-mismatches
-fight strategy differences
-competition level has increased

That’s just a few off the top of my head.

Imagine watching basketball and wanting one team to just dominate another team and easily win 100 points to 10. That’s basically what wanting finishes in MMA is.

We get more decisions now because fighters:
-are evenly matched
-know how to win
-are much more skilled

More skilled = better defence = better survival

Remember, martial arts is just as much about finishing and doing damage as it is about survival and minimising damage.

It’s because the matchmaking is better, and the fighters are better, making less mistakes. I don’t feel like there are less spectacular finishes.
