IMO the biggest mistake of BJ's career in terms of a legacy was "greasegate".
He had been outspoken against PED's and even knocked out a Sean Sherk almost definitely on steroids and EPO in a huge LW title fight.
"Greasegate" detracted from his complaints about PED's and showed a delusional streak which many then applied to his complaints about PED's.

Greasegate was awful.
But let's not pretend BJ plucked that excuse out of thin air, it was talked about by fighters before BJ fought Georges the second time.
I DO NOT think grease played a role in the outcome of UFC 94, but BJ, a sucker for a good alibi, grabbed on to it.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=76eg0Tdd4dMDon't forget BJ's assertions about the intel Kenny Florian gave him (Kenny's subsequent denials fueled the build up to UFC 101) ahead of that fight either.
BJ was fed a lot of that bullshit after the GSP fight and it's too bad he ate it all up. He did get the rule change implemented so it's a net win for the sport, I guess.
