UFC Matchmaking Concept Retarded

One thing that I really hate about the UFC is their knack of spoiling a potential blockbuster matchup.

In boxing they know how to build up fighters leading to a huge fight. In the UFC its the opposite. The contendor fights happen to be more meaningful than the championship fight itself.

I'll give you some examples. When Penn was primed to take on Hughes a second time, they feed him to GSP way to go, their eventual matchup ended up being less meaningful. Karo was on the path to the a championship fight and they feed him to Diego setting him back. Diego was on the path of a title shot and they gave him Koschek a second time to derail him. Now they feed him to BJ Penn wtf!! Give the guy a break!

All the while we get treated to garbage championship matches like Hughes/Riggs, GSP/Serra, Hughes/Serra and Sylvia/Couture. Even with the HWs they ruined a potential Cro Cop/Sylvia matchup by giving him a dangerous Gonzaga.

UFC Matchmaker: Learn how to build Blockbuster Championship fights. This is not done by derailing a legitimate contenders time and time again!!

Putting all their eggs into one basket is part of what has gotten Boxing into trouble over the years IMHO.

What we need are more tournament style match-ups. Everyone loves a good tournament.

XP-Magus

I don't want to see any easy fights for anyone. If you don't get through the best in your division, then you don't deserve the shot.

There are plenty of great matchups that can be made now. I'd like to see them.

i love tournaments

"In boxing they know how to build up fighters leading to a huge fight."

Yes, that Judah vs. Baldomir fight really built up the then much anticipated maga-fight between Judah and Mayweather.

"When Penn was primed to take on Hughes a second time, they feed him to GSP way to go"

BJ asked for that fight. Oh and LMAO at BJ the obvious favorite at the time being "fed to GSP".

"Karo was on the path to the a championship fight and they feed him to Diego setting him back."

LMAO at Karo being "fed" to anyone.

"All the while we get treated to garbage championship matches like Hughes/Riggs, GSP/Serra, Hughes/Serra and Sylvia/Couture."

Hughes Riggs was a placeholder, they didn't want to risk Hughes losing before the Royce fight (they did exactly what you accuse them of not doing). GSP vs. Serra, yup real garbage. Hughes fighting for the belt, more garbage. Sylvia vs. Couture, the biggest HW title fight the UFC could possibly have made at the time... more garbage. /sarcasm.

"Diego was on the path of a title shot and they gave him Koschek a second time to derail him."

Diego refused a title fight until his contract was up and he ASKED for Koschek.

'Even with the HWs they ruined a potential Cro Cop/Sylvia matchup by giving him a dangerous Gonzaga."

Wait, Sylvia vs. Couture was garbage, but Sylvia vs. a guy most UFC fans had never fucking heard of was a big fight?

Oh and we now have Couture vs. Gonzaga which is going to be a much bigger fight for the mainstream fans than Sylvia vs. Cro Cop could ever have dreamed of being.

You make a great point.

lol@gsp vs serra being a "crap fight"

multi-fight contracts, with pay based on wins, and less negotiating power with losses?

Could have a little something to do with this.

"The last thing we need is the PRIDE, or boxing concept where we see top fighters rarely facing tough competition."

You are absolutely correct.

I want non title fights so I can see things like Couture vs. Zulu. Not really!

Every time they try to script the title picture it blows up (see Couture Liddell 1 or Crocop Gonzaga or Couture Belfort 1). IMO it's better to let the best earn it.

The thread starter's screen name is about as ironic as a retarded kid going by the name "Math Whiz".....

.....horrible thread.

there should not be easy fights in the UFC and there rarely are any

"No, Riggs was a late replacement."

Right and Karo was a place holder. He was not considered the number 1 contender at the time. That's why the fight was not delayed, or done after Karo was healthy.

"What? A break? If the guy can't beat the best in the division then he doesn't deserve a title shot."

Right on. It's competition people. It's a sport. The best freaking well better fight the best.

All fighters should be fighting people 'at their level'. This is the emodiment of MMA.

LOL by derailing a fighter that wants a title shot only to lose to a lesser opponent.

"he loses to Serra and everyone thinks he is overrated with a weak chin (lol)."

Only has one KO loss....Cro-Cop and Couture have a couple... Weak chin, guess Liddell has one now as well.

He's right. They always kill the big potential matchups maybe b/c they're set on choosing their title holders.

"MMA Analyzer", I'm ignoring everything you just wrote, because you said this:

All the while we get treated to garbage championship matches like Hughes/Riggs

Joe Riggs didn't make weight at UFC 56, so it was a non-title fight. The only reason that fight even happened was due to the fact that Karo Parisyan got hurt and Riggs was a replacement. Another thing, that fight was over 2 and a half years ago (November '05), when Diego Sanchez, Josh Koscheck, Matt Serra, B.J. Penn, Jon Fitch, GSP, and Sean Sherk weren't in the UFC welterweight title picture. Diego had just got his first quality UFC win two weeks before against Nick Diaz, Koscheck was just choked out by Drew Fickett a month earlier, Serra had just lost to Karo, B.J. was with K-1, Fitch just had his first UFC fight a month prior, and GSP and Sherk (who Hughes already beat) were fighting each other the same night as Hughes vs. Riggs. Meanwhile, Riggs was fresh off a win over Chris Lytle from a month earlier, was 2-1 in the UFC at that point, and Hughes needed an opponent.

p.s. - You should change your screen name, because you don't know anything about MMA or Analyzing.

oooh...so my point is not valid due to one example? talk about nitpiking. Bevois, you are on ignore because of your incapability to discuss the big picture.

You guys are f&^cking stupid and little comprehension of sports marketing. How big of a main event is mostly based on hype and momentum of the teams or fighters. Yes, the UFC is doing well but they could be doing much much better.

The fact is that they had a chance to hype up many big time fights but ruined it through poor matchmaking.

Here are the blockbuster fights that should have happened but didn't.

Hughes vs. Penn 2 (before feeding Penn to GSP)

Hughes or current WW Champ vs. Karo (before feeding Karo to Diego)

Current WW Champ vs. Diego Sanchez (before feeding Sanchez to Koschek

Current WW vs. Koschek potential

Syvlia vs. Cro Cop

You get the point. So now what are they doing? They're pitting GSP against Koscheck??? This is exactly what I'm talking about. Consistently having contender fights which are more meaningful than championship matches.

I'm sure you guys are thinking well the division is too competitive, you can't give everybody title shots. How about this? Don't waste time on useless matchups for the Champion as you did with Hughes/Royce, GSP/Serra and now Hughes/Serra.

The UFC just wasted a full year of potential great championship matches in the WW division because of the Royce fight and the stupid TUF title shot fiasco!!

TTTMF!!

typing a bunch of shit that was wrong the first time and you were clowned for typing it just looks dumber when you repeat it.

Ruined by fighters losing. If they win the potential for the big fight becomes bigger. My complaint lies in the number of rematches we are given. Perhaps as the sport grows with more cards and more fights we will have the chance to truly see fighters work their way up to Championship level thus building up the classic match-ups we all crave.

by your "feeding" logic Koscheck should be champ.
How do you feed BJ to anyone?
