Underdog Jason Young talks UFC debut vs. Poirier

Jason Young from London, England will meet Dustin Poirier this weekend at UFC 131, stepping in after Rani Yahya was forced to withdraw from the bout several weeks ago.

Young - a striker by nature (which I'm sure you guys wouldn't expect from a UK guy) - speaks highly of Poirier and is predicting an exciting fight.

He has recently defeated a BJJ black belt in Canada and Sergej Grecicho, who was Europe's #1 featherweight at the time and a Sambo and submission specialist, at Cage Warriors.

He was delighted to get the call to take the fight, and hopes to put on a good show in his first outing:

“I get up early in the morning for a 4-and-a-half mile run to try and keep the weight down,” Young says. “I go from there straight to the gym at Team Titan which is good at the minute because Brad [Pickett] is over from America, so I’m training with Brad quite a lot, training with Ash [Grimshaw]. We’ve got a good camp. I train with Kieran Keddle as well for my stand-up. No doubt he is one of the best stand-up Thai boxers in the country at his weight. I do bits with Peter Irving as well, Nick Osipczak, Jess Liaudin, Michael Pastou, the names are endless. I’ve got the right guys around me and I’m always there training. I put everything into what I’m doing.”

He also beat a very good wrestler in Abdul Mohamed via decision a couple of years back, some clips of which are in this vid.

Cool, Britto is a tough dude. Poirier had an awesome win over Grispi, but a formerly mediocre UFC-level fighter in Roop (who is doing really well now) did the same, but worse. That makes me think that this will be more competitive than some people have been giving Young credit for.

i will be routing for him but i doubt he will win

Nothing to lose!

War Young! Seems like a really humble guy who's trying to do the right thing and continue improving is game. Go get that 'W' son. Phone Post

I think this guy is going to be a live underdog.  Poirier will be overvalued based off of his Grispi fight.

I agree in a way jjj2121, but I also think that the way Roop manhandled Grispi has taken the shine off it a little bit... Jason is still definitely the underdog though, but he's in this fight for sure.

Young put on a great fight but he lost the rounds 1 and 3.

30-27 was baffling though. Really weird.
