**VIDEO** Avellan Shows Neck Crank Armbar Setup!

Here is my #1 armbar setup from mount... the neck crank armbar!  I've been

executing this vicious technique for years... it is an amazing technique because

it has all the ingredients required for a successful move: easy to do, uncommon,

and has a decoy distraction (the neck crank).

In the video, I even demonstrate an example of me hitting the move in

competition - check it out!

Great move. I find the "can-opener" is a great set up for other submissions, from the mount and the guard. Especially against higher rank guys. They think "I can't believe this guys is trying to neck crank me". When they try to counter, you counter their counter with another submission.

I saw a very old video once of Helio Gracie doing the can-opener from the mount.

 Thanks nowaydo!

Marcos, I am very impressed with your videos. The detail and quality of the moves you've shown have been top notch. They are all high percentage moves. I appreciate you sharing them and hope you have much success with your academy. If I am ever in the area I will certainly stop in for a private lesson. Again, thank you for sharing!!!

Oh yeah, by the way. I have been killing people with that half guard sweep you shown in a recent video!! It's top notch, thanks!!!!!

Thanks swiftnhbfighter, please do swing by when you are in town!  Mike, thanks for the TTT

I always hated that move as being so crude compared to the typical BJJ armlock.

That being said, it is very effective providing you have a good Mount game already. I have pulled it off many times in the past few years after seeing in the Avellan Highlights.

which Avellan is this one again?

Thanks FJJ828 for the post!

Nice move but illegal in IBJJF comps though right?

I like how you show the move before breaking it down and also include hitting it in real time footage

Hey carcaju, just noticed your post, I'm not sure if it is legal or illegal, I know that in tournaments such as ADCC, they would probably allow this since it is being used as a submission setup rather than an actual sub.  I know in ADCC they allow the can opener to open the guard but not to submit your opponent.  If you noticed in my live example, I'm holding the crank for only a moment.

I have never competed in IBJJF and probably never will, so I'm not familiar with the rules.  Maybe someone here with experience with the rules can help clarify.

panic686, thank you for your post

I like the setup, but see it as risky in any tournament that forbids neck cranks.

A setup only works against a credible opponent if it is also a credible threat. You can can't fake-out your opponent; he can feel the difference. Either you threaten his neck, or you don't. In which case, either he taps, or he gives you his arm. If the rules forbid neck cranks, he isn't under any obligation to escape your neck crank by giving away his arm. (Any more than he would be under some obligation to spin out of an forbidden healhook giving you a kneebar.) Instead, your opponent taps, leaving you disqualified due to an illegal technique.
