The Extreme Challenge 29 Best of the Best 8 man tournament took place In 1999 before Hughes was considered the best 170lb fighter in the world.
The tournament incuded some great young under 170 lb fighters, Dave Meene, Chris Lytle, LaVerne Clark, Joe Doerksen and of course Matt Hughes
Here are Hughes' fights from that tournament
I used to have some of Matt's earlier fights pre-UFC and he was definitely on his way to becoming a monster.

yeah saw some fo the EXTREME CHALLENGE events, they had some good fights with up and comers who went on to become well known.
Who was the promoter for that, was it MONTE COX?
Seems I recall a light heavyweight named GAry something who woudl go ape shit on some guys who were overmatched in a mismatch against him
I talked to LaVerne Clark on the phone about this tournament about a week ago. He told me that his fight with Hughes was his third of the day and Hughes' first. Dont know what validity there is to those claims, but thats what he said.

I loved the EC shows! Go Monte!

I saw 2 of the old Extreme Challenge shows. At the time their bigger shows were as good as UFC events.
I remeber when they had EC at the river center. Anyone else watch the old tuff man contests they had at the river center. Robbie Lawler vs. Jeff Osborn? Those were some battles

It was just the little events, like one they had in Utah in the middle of an oval, that sort of event you can't recreate now. And seeing all the guys that are now retiring is quite amazing. As well as the talent that never went into UFC... Jeremy Bullock FTW EC 22... If you've never seen it, then today is your lucky day.
Where is Jordan Damon!? He seemed like a dude that was going to tear some shit up.
