I'll be staying in the Royal Oak, MI area the 10th-16th and wondering what are some better gyms to check out and what the mat fees are if you know them.
In Ann Arbor I would recommend Sean Bansfield, but that might be a bit too much of a drive.
Warrior Way martial arts. Boasts 4 black belts, many brown and purple belts as well. Biggest team in Michigan and also the best. Come on down for sure we would love to have you!
Definitely Warrior Way. We have many students from the Royal Oak area, it's about a 20-25 minute drive straight down a major highway. We have classes from 6-7 PM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 7-830 on Tuesday and Thursday, and 12-1 PM on Saturday.
Classes are a mix of positional instruction and positional rolling most days, with live match-style rolling added in on Tuesday and Thursdays. There is also a core group of people who stay after class to do live rolling after class has ended for an hour or so. We've got more mat space than any other gym in the state that I've ever seen.
Come check us out!
If near Ann arbor is Sean Bansfield the way to go?
When I was there I trained at a burned-out house with a gentleman named "Lonnie". Class was mostly stray dogs and a couple meth heads, so communication was difficult, but who needs to talk when you're there to train?
There were no mats but there were old mattresses in what used to be the living room.
IIRC, mat fee was all the cash and credit cards in my wallet as well as my rental car.
Next time I'll probably check out a different school.

Definitely was when I was there 10 years ago. I'm not sure what other options are in the area now but Sean is a high quality black belt.
I'd also recommend checking out the Ribeiro Club (Ursa Academy) in Ann Arbor. I've never trained at Sean's so can't pass judgment.
Sean Bansfield is the one of the best Black Belts in Michigan. He received his Black Belt from Saulo Ribeiro and now has the 2nd degree from IBJJF. If you are in Southeast Michigan go check out Ann Arbor Jiu Jitsu. They just moved to a better location. OSS!

Lol.
I didnt get a chance to train elsewhere but I highly recommend Detroit BJJ in Dearborn. Great facility, lots of mat space, and the guys there are top notch.
Do you train there jiu jitsu player?
