Old Silva would have had a much better chance but people these days are way too focused on what Silva did in the past. The respect for Silva's past achievements has blinded them to the realities of today..

I would substitute "succeed" for "try". This fight goes like a replay of the first 3 rounds of Sonnen/Silva.
Chael is a bad match up for Silva. He would take him down and beat on him for three rounds.
I have a hard time not seeing Chael win this. Keep in mind it would be a 3 round fight unless its a main event (new 5 rounders). If Chael can dominate Anderson Silva for 3 rounds I'd bet he could do the same to Wanderlei.

Yeah I saw some pretty fast paced GnP from him vs. Nate and Silva too. I also saw it accomplish NOTHING but points and appear to be little more than an annoyance.
Chael tagged Anderson a few times on the feet because he was moving forward aggressively and Anderson REFUSED to KO him because he promised the sub.

I AM A MOFO - Chael set the RECORD for most strikes ever landed in one match. He punched and GnP'd a dude constantly for four and a half rounds.

Sonnen would take him down and implement his electric blanket style offense for three rounds. He would remain active enough while on top, to avoid being stood back up, but would not come close to finishing the fight.
It would be 3 rounds of watching one guy trying to finish in the few brief chances he has, versus a guy that is content with laying on another man for 15 minutes for a decision.

Sonnen would get DESTROYED by Silva....You guys are underestimating Silva, he's in great shape these days and at Middleweight he made the best decision of his career...IMHO He has another run at the title... but he won't fight Anderson so he'd prolly stay around the contender area...He has nothing to prove except fighting who he wants...and He wants Sonnen bad....Chael is a little girl and wouldnt stand a chance with 90% of the roster without steroids and testesterone.
