Rich Franklin didn’t have a wrestling background but even still I don’t ever remember him fighting a grinding wrestler to which he had to constantly avoid takedowns and relentless gnp…hmm am I accurate or am I forgetting the wrestlers he fought? It’s not wrestlefucking at all…it’s called getting into a striking position to effectively deliver your detestation strikes…look at guys like Askren and Coutures fights to see what wrestlefuck means…it means basically getting taken down and basically made helpless by a much better wrestler…Usman just did this to Meek and GSP did this for the last 5 years of. No… The evolution was a product of the early years when fighters were still figuring out how to successfully and seamlessly blend styles within the confines of, and as, the rules changed.
At this point a fighter like Frank Shamrock, Franklin, Matt Hughes, and a number of other fighters long since retired could be legitimate contenders, if not champions, in this era. What does change, and has since the beginning, and will in the future, is that there is an ebb and flow to if (in general) strikers or grapplers dominate at any given time.
