Was Gurgel already looking to get out?

Im glad hes gone and hope the best for him plus hopes he does the Maia approach by taking the dude down and quickly subbing him...

But with him signing with Strikeforce as quick as he did. Was he ready to get out before the UFC was ready to show him door?

Judging by his interview after being released I would have to say no.

Not only that, what's the upside of going to a smaller promotion?? It's not like he signed with another large org. like Affliction for $$$. Not a knock on Strikeforce, but let's be honest. They're a small regional promotion and Gurgel will only be making a fraction of what he was making in the UFC.

Ya but how many other free agents have signed with a different org within a hour...

I think he was looking to get out way before

read his interview, it is plain as day that he was not looking to get out, and is looking forward to getting back in.

He just happens to have a lot of name recognition, and will be a good draw for a regional promotion. Also, he might have been willing to take almost anything $$$ wise, which let them ink the deal quickly.

Tito could have easily signed a deal within 15 minutes of being released if he wasn't looking for huge money.

I think the UFC contracts prohibit negotiating with other promotions while the fighter is under contract. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere.

The UFC has said before that they like StrikeForce as a company. They probably told Gurgel they would bring him back if he wins a few and what better way to show yourself than a company that you know the UFC is on good terms with.

I like Gurgel. I wish I had half the skill I know he has. The guy has heart too! You have to give him that,

He's got a great heart, I do have to give him that. However, I question about whether or not he has any brains. Not trying to be a dick, but I keep hearing about how great on the ground he is, but all he does is stand and take a beating.

He has said that he wants to make fights entertaining. OK, then stand for a little bit, warm the guy up, then take him down, GNP him for a little bit than pull off a slick submission! That would be entertaining for most fans. Look how many fans that Maia and Hazellet seem to have busting out the submissions! C'mon guy. Work smart, not hard.

Thats what I am talking bout man. Maia goes in and gets his work down quickly. If ya got a sick ground then do what you do best and sub some fools.

Jorge is a BB. He has trained some great fighters, who have great BJJ....but to compare him to Maia? I like Jorge as a person, trainer and fighter, but since coming to the UFC, he has not been able to utilize his BJJ like Maia has. Maia is probably one of the top 5-10 p4p BJJ players in the world, and has been able to translate very well into MMA. The problem with Jorge, however, is not the fact that he doesn't use his BJJ.....but that he DOESN"T WANT to use his BJJ. He never wanted to go to the ground with Riley....he wanted to knock him out.

For the record I wasn't comparing Jorge to Maia. I was just saying that from what I've heard, Jorge is excellent on the ground. Supposedly his ground game is far better than his stand up. My point was that if this is the case than he needs to take fights to ground. Its all about the game plan. If your ground game is better than an opponents, you take him to the ground. If your stand up is better, you keep it on your feet. FACT.Maia's ground game seems to be better than anyone's in the UFC, therefore, if he chose to stand against, say Rich Franklin that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense would it? Jorge reportedly stands up because he thinks that is more exciting for fans, however it seems to be to his detrement.Edited for hypothetical opponent's name*

Dana likes Jorge.

I suspect he put a call in to Scott Coker, told him Jorge was about to become a free agent, and put in the good word for him. Coker, being a smart guy, saw that Jorge is a recognizable TUF fighter with a reputation of putting on exciting fights, and inked him to a deal.
