Was Scott Smith Playing Possum?

Every fight Scott Smith is in, it seems like he gets hurt but then fires back.  I'm beginning to think that he plays possum in there.  At one point he was almost doubled over against Diaz and then some vicious shots that just missed.

What say you?

if you mean the kind of possum that's found lying dead on the side of the road after getting squashed by a truck, then yes, scott smith was playing possum. and playing it well, at that.

 lol

I think his ribs are made of paper mache

imo smith is not too good, his opponents are always better and beating him up and he catches em with a death blow

Yeah, there's something about body shots that really, really seem to hurt him. Almost any time one lands it seems to hurt him badly. Yes, sometimes he fires back when people get overzealous, but there's no doubt they're doing damage.

I had this thought during the Faber fight too, thinking, "Wouldn't it be slick if he faked the broken hand, conserved energy, and then came out with a flurry and vicious KO in R5?"

The rope-a-dope in MMA would be a hell of a lot riskier that Ali's though, considering how many ways you can slip up and lose.

Obviously these guys watch film on their opponents, and Diaz was no different.  He mixed up his strikes and landed some huge body shots in that fight.  I was there, and in between rounds Smith was on his knees in his corner holding his ribs.  He went straight to the hospital after the fight, as did Riggs who broke both of his hands in his fight with Baroni.

I think that on Saturday he was playing some possum -- to a point. He was definitely fatigued, definitely knew he was getting his ass handed to him, and definitely knew he didn't have much left to give.

He knew he had enough energy to throw a couple last bombs, but they needed to land or he was sunk. So he opened himself way up to try to get Nick to overcommit to the attack.

Respect for Riggs - did he even advertise the broken hands after the fight?

Maybe he just needs to do a shitload of sit-ups or something. Every shot to the body crumples him. It's actually kind of amazing that more of his opponents haven't picked up on that.

I like Scott Smith. Everyone likes Scott Smith, but that doesn't change the fact that he's basically the Mickey Ward of mma. That is not a bad thing and has proven to be quite lucrative for him.

Smith is a quality journeyman fighter but Diaz is championship quality. That said, I could not believe that I guy that used to fight at heavyweight was manhandled by a guy whose greatest win was at 160.

What's pretty amazing is that after all that Gary Shaw horseshit about having to create a 160 pound division because 170 was too big and forcing guys like Nick Diaz to fight much bigger men, Diaz is actually borderline top 10 in the MW division now.

He totally does it all the time and t works! His opponents know he does it now so that are CONCERNED about rushing in when he's "hurt". This helps him when he really is hurt. Now all he needs to do is learn how to move his head around and keep his fucking hands up.

He needs a new camp...........

I was thinking the same thing during the fight....it looks like he like to lay on the cage like he is readdy to die and suddenly explose with a kick or a punch.....and it worked for him in numerous fight.

But Nick was too much for him and was throwing punch like crazy "pop pop pop "

Agreed on the new camp. Smith really hasn't brought anything new to the table in a long time.

Anyone have any insight on what Nick was talking about with Smith's training partners? Are they slackers or what?

think he trains with Faber,at least i heard he did

He was definitely playing possum for a while there, pretending to be hurt when he wasn't. Then he actually got hurt and the act went out the window.

Just bring in KJ to put a stop to that disrespectful piece of shit again.

Scott Smith has a lot of flaws, but there's no doubt that if the guy lays his iron fists on you cleanly, he will knock you out cold.  You have to be really careful when you're dealing with a guy that isn't the most technically brillaint at all, but knows even if he is hurt that all he has to do is land one good bomb.  Smith stays in fights that he is taking pure beatings in, knowing that if he can just land that one shot he'll be good to go.  He doesn't have top 25 level skills, but believe me... he has top 10 p4p punching power.  The guy is definitely one of the hardest punchers in MMA.  Mike Brown has that type of firepower at 145... the ability to take guys out with one or two good shots.
