What would you think about a situation like this? Of course this is purely hypothetical.
Someone comes into your BJJ class and is from out of town. Lets say, California. And he comes to say.... Arizona. Well he comes into your class wearing a white belt and you have never seen this guy before so you have him roll with your white belts during training. After a while with different white belts, it is obvious this person knows more than he is letting on. Later, upon further questioning this person admits he is really a brown belt.
As a student what would you think of this person? What if anything, would you do?
As the instructor, what would you do?
What do you think would motivate someone to do this? If of course it were a real situation... which of course its not because it just doenst make sense.
We get this alot where I roll. It entirely depends on the person's attitude. If he is there beating the crap out of people just to do it, then show him the door. If he is cool and just did not want to come in sporting a brown belt to avoid looking cocky, and was cool about it, then I would let him know where you stand on that. If you want him to wear it, then have him do it.
It is really in your ball park having seen how he was acting. If he's cool, great, if not, then the door.

I dont know where the fuck u guys come up with these situations. I couldnt imagine a brown belt throwing on a white belt. Its absurd. What possible use could he have of beating up scrubs? When you get your brown, its because you have trained for years and years, so the joy of tapping some newbie is LONG gone. That joy is gone when you are an advanced white, or blue belt...no Brown is still going to get off by tapping guys who dont know shit about BJJ. Its a ridicilous hypothetical question.
Ill answer it anyway. As a student, I would think the guy sucks for being a brown and pretending hes a white. What would I do? Well I imagine I wouldnt be able to do shit if he submitted me a bunch of times (like in your story). What the fuck could I do, yell at the guy?
As an instructor I would roll with him on the first day and tool the fuck out of him. It is your job as an instructor to humble EVERY new person that comes into the school, regardless of if they are cool or not. You immediately put your best student to tool them, or you do it yourself. THats just how it is. Thats bjj.
Judo/Sambo guys usually wear a white belt when they go to BJJ. Some of these guys are at least purples but since they dont have BJJ rank they should wear white - unless you want to promote them on the first day.
LMAO AT REXKWONDO!!
U THINK ANYBODY WANTS TO TAKE A ROUNDHOUSE KICK TO THE FACE WHILE IM WEARIN THESE BADBOYS?!!!
Im a black belt in bullshit-su but still wear a white belt in bjj, what is the problem?
Im not an instructor. And I guess you are right that as a student, what really can you do? But ya, i really dont know the reasoning for someone to do this. But Im sure this has never really happened.
Thats like making a scenario where an NFL football player joins a junior high league, and runs over all the teens and picks up 300 yards a game running. You think a guy in the NFL is going to be all proud of himself, and do such a thing, simply for the stats, and accolades?
A brownbelt going to train at another school should tell the teacher he is a brownbelt(best case tell him privatly) and be prepared to wear a white belt unless he is told to wear a brown.
It is a faux pas at some schools to just put on a belt without asking if it is recognised.
All BBJ schools have had karate types come in and put on colored belts. It is often an uncomfortable situation.
Now, would you guys feel the same way if it was someone kinda well known? Like maybe you know the name, but you never met the person so didnt know what he looked like.
Yes.He should speak with the teacher and ask what to wear.Even if the teacher is a bluebelt. It is his school. If he is a legit brown the teacher should say he can wear it.But if for some reason he doesn't and the brown doesn't like it, then he should leave.
like if Eddie Bravo came in and asked to wear a white belt?
Instead of trying to hint at which way we should keep heading, why dont you tell us EXACTLY who came in your studio, and asked to wear a white belt.
You remind me of my mom. Here are the convos
Mom: Did you forget something on this paper?
Me: No it looks like I filled it out correctly.
Mom: Are you sure? There may be an error in there, why dont you look again?
ME: (looks again for 5 minutes), Mom I cant find a problem with this anywhere.
Mom: Well why dont you look more in the lower region of the paper.
Me: FOR CHRIST FUCKING SAKE TELL ME WHERE THE FUCK UP IS BEFORE I SHOVE THIS PEN UP YOUR FUCKING ASS!!
"A brownbelt going to train at another school should tell the teacher he is a brownbelt(best case tell him privatly) and be prepared to wear a white belt unless he is told to wear a brown."
I disagree here. If I had a legitimate BJJ brown belt from a respected instructor, and the new instructor wanted me to wear a whitebelt, I absolutely wouldn't. I would stick to wearing a brown belt.
This is BJJ after all and my belt-rank is a BJJ belt-rank not a "Renzo Gracie BJJ" rank.
In fact, if my BJJ rank was demoted at the new club, I would consider this an insult to my old club and my previous instructor.
I have no ranking in bjj. I've trained no gi for the last 2 years. No gi - no rank. I have a judo brown belt. I wear it , and let everyone know it is a judo rank. No big deal. If you want me to wear my green belt I will. I have no white belt (out grew it around the waist. ). I can see this happening Nevertap.BJJ still views the brown belt as "pro-level rank". You see it here all the time in the " I tapped a purple, brown or black belt" posts that so frequently hit the forum. With so much importance on these Rankings is it a surprise that a Nuerosis starts to develop and people begin to fear wearing their belt? If some kid 10-20 years younger beats him everyone will think he is unworthy. Few egos can handle that. I would take Jason Sallee approach.
^^^^ And you dont want to fuck with this guy. Hes created his own hybrid style developed in over 2 seasons of the octagon!
BREAK THE WRIST, WALK AWAY!!

Yes the scenario is "possible" for one belt demotion. A brown belt comes in and wears his purple belt. A purple comes in and wears a blue. A blue belt comes in and wears a white. Youre not going to get a brown belt in bjj come in and wear a white belt. There would be NO purpose in it.
It doesnt really matter who this person was if it ever happened. But I was just curious how others would view this.
Personally, I dont think it is right to wear a different belt to a visiting class. And I dont think it is right for an instructor to not let someone wear a belt that they earned in that same art. But I do think the instructor should be told in advance.

But the problem is that it is up to him to decide if you are legitimate. His school. His rules. In this case he is saying the guy is famous. If thats the case and the instructer knew him and his rank(which is doubtful) he should say that he can wear it.But it is up to the instructer. It is disrespectful to not ask him.
The name could be recognizable once you hear it. But just to see him in class you wouldnt know who he is maybe.
i wear a white belt just to show people rank does not matter. too many people are worried about belt color and stripes. also, the white belt i wear was given to me by a very good friend and i like wearing it because of him. he has passed down to me every single belt i have owned. everyone in the room knows my rank.
when i travel i tell the instructors what my rank really is and why i wear the white belt. they tell the class the situation and they are fine with it. when i compete i put my belt on.
"This is BJJ after all and my belt-rank is a BJJ belt-rank not a "Renzo Gracie BJJ" rank."
i do not agree with this. lineage is very important and if you have a good one it is worth bragging about.
