Weidman: I need to expose Silva with wrestling

<p>At UFC 162 Chris Weidman will attempt to do what no person in the UFC has been able to do, beat Anderson Silva inside the Octagon. How exactly is the question, but Weidman knows one key to victory will be to 'expose' him with wrestling:</p>
"The obvious answer is the takedowns and trying to expose him with the wrestling," Weidman said earlier this week during a media conference call for UFC 162. "But we’re totally different fighters. I believed I could beat him before that fight, but (Silva) stays relaxed and if you’re tense and he’s relaxed, eventually he’s going to be able to get off what he wants. So I think the main thing I learned from that is that I thought Chael was a little bit too uptight and tense when he got the takedown, and I think it paid off for Anderson to stay relaxed the entire fight because he was able to have the energy to knock that out in the fifth round. And all props to Anderson on that."
"I think he definitely obviously has a strong mental game," Weidmand said. "I think a lot of the guys he kind of beats before they walk out there. ... Guys go in there and some of them are unsure about themselves. So I think his performances kind of speak for themselves and kind of draw into the minds of the guys that are going to walk into the cage with him if you’re not mentally prepared and truly have confidence in yourself. So I think the main thing is to have confidence and the best guy is going to win. I’m not really going to let it mess with me at all."

He's right. People give Anderson way too much respect. Chael did not in the first fight, in the second fight he did. And you can see the difference. If it bleeds we can kill it.
I really like his attitude, but do you honestly think all of Anderson's opponents were mentally beat before fightday? It's easy to say how you're feeling in prefight interviews, but once you step in the cage adjacent to Silva, things may very well be totally different. Will Chris be as calm come Saturday July, 6?

He's just a man. There are far more terrifying things in this world than a Brazilian black man. It's not a given that he will be afraid. After all, the mind is very malleable.

I wasn't implying fear as opposed to calm. More like pressure or anxiety. Fighting for his first UFC title shot on PPV against a man who has obliterated the competition.

Chris is definitely right about the wrestling part. If there's one thing silva lacks compared to other elite fighters it's takedown defense. And Weidman has a great transition game into takedowns as well as a good top game which gives him a decent chance here.
Inexperience and the layoff from injury are two huge question marks unfortunately.

Just not really impressed with what i have seen. He drops Munoz with an elbow the same Munoz that Matt Hamill of all people KO'ed with a headkick. He had a horrible fight against Maia and couldn't finish Sakara even on the ground. Anderson has already fought and finished much better guys than Chris is. In the division i would even favor Belfort,Chael,Okami,Rockhold over him maybe even Bisping. Wolf tickets i tell you.

Takedown Silva? Fat chance, he has the 2nd best Takedown defense in the UFC. Even if you get him down, he has this thing called BJJ of which he is a blackbelt.
He doesn't have the second best TDD in the ufc. He does at MW iirc.
I expect fighters to be confident, and to believe in their abilities. But Chris comes across to me as someone trying to muster up his courage. I don't believe he thinks he's better than Silva.
