Weidman: Loss to Rockhold a 'fluke'

Although he made no excuses immediately after the fight, it was revealed recently that Chris Weidman had broken his foot prior. Weidman talked about the injury recently and how he thinks the rematch will be different:

"I say these things, because they came out," Weidman told MMA Fighting in a recent interview. "It's a fact. There's no excuses."

Weidman (13-1) lost the middleweight title to Rockhold by fourth-round TKO in that bout. The Long Island native said he broke his foot in two places about six weeks before the fight and also needed surgery after the fight to remove bone spurs from his elbow. With that knowledge, Weidman still did not want to withdraw from the bout.

"I knew what I was getting myself into, but I still thought I could go out there and beat him," Weidman said. "Even with that stuff. And he proved that I was wrong. He came out to fight. He was better than me that night."

Weidman will get a chance at retribution when he faces Rockhold in a rematch in the main event of UFC 199 on June 4 in Los Angeles. The former champ is recovered and back to training. He said he's already in shape three months out of the clash and more motivated than ever to get back what he believes is his.

"I know what I'm capable of," Weidman said. "I know my potential and I know I wasn't close to it. The fact that because of what I've accomplished in the past gives me the opportunity to get a rematch is a great situation to be in. In most situations, people don't get the second chance, especially right away. So, I'm very grateful for the opportunity I have. There's no question in my mind that I'm gonna go out there and make a statement, completely dominate him and make sure everybody knows the last fight was a fluke."

It was a complete domination and beat down by a better prepared fighter.

I'm a big Weidman fan but he got cocky and tried some weird stuff against Rockhold and paid for it. Rockhold has a style that is going to be rough against Weidman any day of the week.

No need to try and take away from another fighters victory. I'm sure Weidman didn't appreciate people calling his wins against Silva "flukes" and he shouldn't be doing it to Rockhold. Accept the loss with humility, improve and come back for your belt. Nobody wants to hear excuses or BS about a fluke win.

I wouldn't say it was a complete domination, they were going kick for kick but Luke's were a bit harder. Weidman showed better boxing but in the end luke had his number. The last bit of the fight was a domination don't get me wrong and I think Chris could be handling this better Phone Post 3.0

OMG whattttttt?

Starting to think Weidman will say anything to keep those big fight paychecks coming in.

Literally thought the entire fight that Chris looked flat-footed and way slower than usual.

At this point I am stoked for the rematch but if Luke handles him again then he's just his kryptonite Phone Post 3.0

Fair enough. I should rewatch the fight.

I just felt like Rockhold had the upper hand most of that fight. You could see him chipping away at Weidman until Weidman threw that silly kick and got manhandled.

SensoriaUtopia - There was nothing at all flukey about it, I have been saying for about a year on here that Rochold would eventually fight, and not only beat Weidman but finish him. Lo and behold that is what he did and when he fights Chris again he will beat him again, and probably finish him again, I say round 3 tko this time.

We all saw the last fight, Weidman cannot just take the fight to the mat when he fights against Luke, and not only is Luke a better striker, Weidman has to worry about actually getting taken down by Luke. There are just too many tools at Luke's disposal, he's probably the most gifted 185 er ever, he seems to actually be getting better.

Agreed, Rockhold is one of the best all around, well rounded fighters I've ever seen.

Chris always looks like that. That's his style oddly and it works. Striking in boxing is different then striking in MMA,

It just doesn't work on Rockhold. Rockhold is really good at everything.

Rockhold beats Weidman again I believe, he's just a better fighter at this point and Rockhold is bigger then Weidman, something he's not always used to.

I wish he would stop with the excuses.

Chris has his moments early but that stupid kick was the end. He did look a bit softer than normal. Phone Post 3.0

People on Sherdog and I'm sure elsewhere predicted Luke being better than Chris everywhere and taking his belt, years before it happened.

Nothing fluky about it.

Lol

Love the name, Machida is the man

Was a close fight until that kick. Weidman looked off the whole fight though. I believe him and think he will win the rematch Phone Post 3.0

Don't forget that Luke has some kind of serious illness and wasnt fully recover. Maybe Chris's can yell louder that he loves his boy. Phone Post 3.0

Weidman will prevail.

Final Form Weidman will be too powerful.
I wonder what form his final power up looks like? All gold skin? Or long blonde hair and no eye-brows? Phone Post 3.0

Weidmans career has been a pile of fluke Phone Post 3.0

no. a fluke was serra beating gsp by rocking him with a forarm to the back of the head

And GSP/Serra 2 made that quite obvious.
