Weight Cutting WILL Cause a Major Death

It’s just a matter of time before a Major MMA Star Dies before they stop this Madness.

I agree with the Doctors 10 point System. They should get some knowledgeable Vets to help and come up with something safe yet effective.

One FC has it down.

You cannot weigh in dehydrated.

UFC vet Rich Franklin is their VP.

Only loss is that it fucks their belt holders bc almost everyone moves up.

Yup I said this yesterday I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a death in the ufc this year due to to weight cutting and them banning IVs has increased the dangers.

I agree. These fighters are literally killing themselves trying to get an advantage. Seeing the videos of the fighters before weigh ins is insane.

How do they do that?

Hydration testing which is something the ufc needs to seriously look into.

Extreme weight cutting needs to go.

By 'major' you mean someone we've heard of and care about, right.? Ha

OP is correct.

Seizures, feinting…nobody cares.

Death? They’ll care.

Until someone dies UFC/USADA won’t do shit.

Yep…it is going to happen. The first death in the UFC will be from weight cutting.

Very simple solution. Promoter stop booking these fighters at these extreme low weights. Commission, stop sanctioning these fights where the fighter is visible excessively dehydrated. Pull him right off the scale and scratch him from the event. Promoter will stop acting against the fighter’s health interest and book them at safe weights. It’s mostly the same fights anyways only 1 weight class up in most cases. This isn’t rocket science, if the guy weighs 200 pounds stop exploiting the dude down at 155 lbs. He’s a middle weight, schedule accordingly.

Here I was thinking all deaths were pretty major

Let me clarify, all people are equally important. What I meant was it’s going to take a high-profile person in the spotlight to die before they do anything. They should find out what each Fighters “Fight Shape” weight is and only allow a 10-12% decrease from that.

Chael Sonnen had to cut 30 ibs in 3 weeks. I read it on here. Was against Dan Miller. Crazy!!!!

Oh a major death is coming. I laugh at people who say elliminating dehydration is impossible. There are two factors that allow for weight cutting - dehydration and rehydration, both of which can be elliminated

1. The gap between the weigh in and fight time. The reason cutting has been getting worse lately I believe is because they INCREASED the time between weigh-ins and fight time. IBJJF has it the way it should be, step on the scale immediately before competing, if you're over go home. But fights will get called off! That's already happening, look at Hall, Khabib, ect. At least if a fight gets called off under the alternative system no one will be near death.

2. A hydration test that goes throughout fight week. Fighters will then be expected to show up UNDER the weight limit and maintain it fully hydrated throughout the week. Essentially forcing fighters to compete at their natural weight class.

The main hinderence to adopting these changes is that it will completely alter the championship and contender structure, which is troublesome, but far less troublesome than a death. A death the UFC cannot say they didn't see coming.

What is a “major death” compared to a “minor death”?

Agreed.  The worst case scenario is that the championships and divisions would get shaken up and reshuffled for a little bit of time (as if they’re not all tied up and screwed up already), but they would fall into their rightful place soon enough.

The UFC is doing good things with USADA and can continue to do good things with addressing this issue.
