The term "incel" is kinda like the term "racist".
It stands for involuntarily celibate, and as others have said, is for dudes that can’t get laid, are mad about it, and hate women. So it’s a legit term and there are legit incels.
However, hardcore leftists & progressives have adopted the term and thrown it at anyone that’s even remotely against the current wave of feminism, is anything other than anti-patriarchy, doesn’t automatically abhor “toxic masculinity”, etc.
For example, if you thought the girl power scene in Avengers Endgame was cringe-worthy, they’d call you an incel.
So they’ve over (and improperly) used the term so much (and so rapidly), that it’s pretty close to losing its real meaning.
Kinda like how these same hardcore leftists and progressives call so many people “racists” and that term has lost a good chunk of its meaning, even though there are still legit racists out there.

i disagree. it's a good idea to have common and specific terminology. there's all kinds of losers or nerds. this is a very specific kind that often lashes out in very specific ways.

Isn't that basically the essence of it?
A nerdy or shy person probably understands the reason they're not getting the attention of the opposite sex is because they're nerdy or shy (and a lot of them mature and eventually get attention).
An incel, on the other hand, believes the lack of attention is primarily the fault of some sort of organized cultural or feminist ideology which unfairly targets men.
Its something largely made up by the left who need to believe in an organised group of angry, violent men whose lack of success with women makes them violent and hateful.
The reality is its a tiny minority of dudes who bitch about women on the internet. It being the internet, much of it is hyperbole and cant be taken seriously.
