We just called 'em "nerds" or "losers" back when I was in high school, but nowadays everything needs a label so it can be categorized, quantified, and dissected. The more validation and attention we give these losers, the worse they're going to get.
i disagree. it's a good idea to have common and specific terminology. there's all kinds of losers or nerds. this is a very specific kind that often lashes out in very specific ways.
I guess it's not the labeling I'm against, so much as the volume of attention directed to a group of losers that don't deserve it. If I thought getting to the "root cause" was possible or achievable and that there would be a solution presented, I'd be all for this much quantification. But it'll get lost in the shuffle as soon as the next buzzword presents itself for the media to glom onto and these losers will still be losers. We'll be no closer to a solution, we'll just have a bright, shiny new "label" for them.
Maybe it's the nihilist in me that doesn't see the point, because I've watch far too many of these cycles on a loop to think anything good will actually come of it.
