What would take longer, earning a black belt in bjj starting with no previous experience. Or training specifically for MMA from the start and becoming a successful Professional Fighter, meaning not having to work any other job?

JUDO
MMA....your looking at 10 years to become a black belt.
if you want to be a champ at MMA, you will very often be one of the following -
Mundial-placing BJJ black belt
ADCC Competitor
International competition caliber amateur wrestler
K1 or similar-level kickboxing Competitor
mid-level pro boxer
think about how long it takes for any of those.

not at all
BJ Penn, Tito Ortiz/Ricco Rodriguez, too many wrestlers to count, too many strikers to count, Jens Pulver and lots of new wave strikers.
only those who have trained in both could answer that.
Obviously success in one area comes a lot faster for some people than for others. But I think the main difference is this: if you train in BJJ hard enough for long enough, you will in all likelihood get your black belt, eventually. Maybe it's five-six years, maybe it's over a decade. If you train just as hard and as long at MMA, there is absolutely no guarantee you will ever have any success in the sport, because you need to win your fights if you're ever going to make good money (unless you're a recognizable pro wrestler/sumo/freakshow), and even if you learn everything you need to know and practice like there's no tomorrow, you can still lose every single fight.
