After a session, one of the guys came up to me and said I reminded him of BJ Penn.
I think he was referring to my cardio levels...
very sore, got dominated, covered in bruises but it was the best experience i've ever had, opened my eyes and i never stopped training since. bjj makes you better as a human in so many ways its stupid not to do it
Sweaty,eye opening, humbling.
Very humbling and beautiful all wrapped up in sweat. Instant love for the sport. Never looked back , all day everyday I think about how i can improve my Bjj game.
Absolutely awful......they'd never heard of a rash guard....or cleaning the mats from previous nights other session.......and also they were very new to this idea called 'teaching' and somehow could not comprehend it....just a bad taste for it.
Blisters on my feet, aces all over and my ego well and truly smashed after being destroyed by people half my size. But most of all it was amazing and fun and 7 months later I'm still going 4 times a week and sill loving every second of it.
It was fun, very frustrating. My hand was sore the next day.....from tapping so much
I was getting my ass kicked repeatedly, and I enjoyed every second of it. I love BJJ, I love boxing, I love Muay Thai (even though I suck at it), and I love MMA. I only wish that my high school would have had a wrestling program.
I got armbarred left and right
My first couple weeks of BJJ can be summarised thusly:
-Not knowing what the hell was going on and having to have my hand held by the more experienced guys
-Being tapped over and over, thus ridding me of what ego I had (I joined the gym as a fat kid with absolutely no confidence)
-Coming home injured and exhausted but knowing that i'd just started something i'd be doing for the rest of my life.
Mine was about 8 years ago, i was only able to attend a few classes and then my knee issues and job, plus life put a halt on attending much after that, I'm currently thinking of starting lessons back up I miss it and have more time now.
My first few times were as a few mentioned earlier very humbling, constant tapping, throat hurt, neck hurt, joints hurt and really makes your ego disappear.
One lesson I learned very fast and always offer to anyone who are going to take the classes. Do NOT spaz out stay calm while rolling, I witnessed a friend attending with me beginning to loose his cool and spazzed out less than 30 sec later he was unconscious on the mat.
Simply put,It humbled the fuck outta me.
I had a lot of fun. We were all beginners, it was a beginner course, and the head coach of the school talked to us about motivation, what the sport is about, what he expects of us, and it was very relaxed and friendly.
We then did a bunch of pummel work, and started with sweeps and positional work for the first sessions.
Then we got into some chokes and whatnot. It was humbling for me because of how quickly I got exhausted, and also because of how clearly I envisioned how to do things, yet was unable to manifest it, because of physical limitations, being very fat, and poor stamina.
The only bad experience I had was when some of the more experienced guys joined us for a session, and one guy slammed me to get out of some kind of sloppy ass submission I attempted. Caught me completely off guard, because I thought slamming was prohibited for gi, and especially for white belts, in gi, in training... in like session 3 or 4.
But I loved it anyway, and I kept getting better. And I kept going. Call me a sick fuck, but I have been injured now for 10-11 months, going back in 1-2 months, but I still go there from time to time to watch and just smell that BJJ gym smell I miss so much :D
I just tried like a week ago.
My legs got cut skin...I bled.
The actual BJJ was weird....I was learning sweeps and getting out of guard...It was weird using GI fabric to hold on to when moving....I was horrible at following the steps.
The actual rolling with other people was fun....I rolled with other white belts....2 of them were smaller than me so I don't think it was fair....I tapped one of them....I faced a bigger guy but I think he was exhausted and he was a white belt like me, i did good against him I think.....I got really exhausted, is pretty damn cool.
My first class we worked on double leg takedowns of all things. When it came time to roll I got armbarred a lot. That's all I remember.
It fuckin' sucked. We trained in the grass early in the morning so it was wet and there was a shitload of prickly shit in the grass as well.
Oh and having a boot go across your face isn't too fun either.
FUCK BJJ AND FUCK THE ARMY
Got told I was very hard to submit, but need to keep my elbows in when rolling
went to a local gym around 2002 or 2003 after watching a ufc.
no instruction was given, they just said "tap when it hurts", i got put to sleep at least 3 times.
Tapped out the instructor and holed his best student.
