Why does he always have a toothpick in his mouth? It gets in the way of him talking.
I think he's developed a habit of chewing on them and probably finds it pleasant and reassuring to have one in.
I know this sounds odd, but I have a similar habit of chewing on the tops of pens I use. I don't have any formal training in psychology, or medicine so please take what I say with a grain of salt but I think some people can develop the habit of chewing on various objects as a stress reliever.
May Jesus bless.

Possibly, it's a little strange to me especially when speaking in press conferences. Usually when I speak in public I try to not have any gum in my mouth let alone a piece of wood.
Similar thing to kids sucking on dummys I suppose?? (Retainers for you yanks!)

Weird I know. It's a stress reliever for me.
