Whats with those Valente Bros Gis?

Do those tops pass IBJJF for competition? Those look like they are 8" shorter than most.

Because it changes the application of the sporting end of it. They essentially make it almost impossible to work sleeve grips, which is a gigantic part of the sport

I know nothing of these guys but they totally seem like rich kids to me.  Like they would be the Laguna Hills kids in Brazil

Always the vibe I got from them as well. Seem nice enough but I couldn't look at Pedros face day in and day out.

Do people from that school compete...?

My impression is that, much like the Gracie Academy, few compete compared to other BJJ schools in the area.

No they aren't comp legal in anything and its just to sorta pay homage to the past as many were like that due to everyone over drying and shrinking the piss out of their gi's. Whatever as it works for them

Rhymenoceros - I can't fathom why someone might care about this issue.

Agreed.

They just like to wash with the hot water bro. Ees normal.

That was the standard BJ gi 70 years ago. Nothing wrong with it.

And all those big teams are lucky they dont compete, too. Could you imagine if the Valente brothers unleashed those Miami hounds on the mundials?  All I'm gonna say is there would be some short sleeves up top of the podium bro.

I wonder if in their no-gi classes they wear round collar dress shirts,  pleated pants, vests and straw hats?

I mean, if you're going old-school, then go old-school!

Have you competed against those guys in the past?

No.

Would they be allowed to compete in those gis?

No.

So again, who cares? This is like complaining about someone in a video wearing board shorts with a gi top and a belt.
Like sombo

Those, plus belt loops, would significantly improve sport BJJ.

That's the target demo of the original Gracie Academy. The bulk of Carlos and Helio's students were bankers, lawyers, politicians and doctors. They weren't taking kids out of the favela.

like, people with disposable income?

Not that anyone cares, but this "Carlos & Helio" stuff annoys me...

Helio was a little boy when the other brothers were FIGHTING & teaching BJJ. Of the original Gracie brothers --according to most everyone including the Brazilian press at the time and Carlos himself-- George was THE Best Vale Tudo fighter of the five Gracie Brothers. He was the original Gracie Family champion.

Yet BJJ people have adoped this "Gracie brothers, Carlos & Helio"  phrase & schools have pictures of just Carlos & Helio as if it reflects some sort of historical reality, when it is designed to be misleading.

It's sort of like always refering to the Machado Brothers as "The Machado brothers, Carlos & John" and just pretending the other three never existed and made no contributions.

I somewhat agree with you there but I think it was really refined during Helio's time onwards, especially with Rolls. If I could get nice poster pics of George I would. For those who have read Choque and Reila's it appears that Carlos actually didn't do much training at all when he was a bit older, in fact hardly any and there were some (I think Japanese) who didn't think much of Carlos' technical skill in the Jiu-jitsu of the time and it is confusing to understand how much influence he had (if much at all) on the refinement of the art.

I truly think Helio took the art and it spread with his refinements simply because he targeted a demographic that had money and mostly because he focused on Rio. There were some lineages through George but they were mostly, outside Rio) where Jiu-jitsu was almost unknown to the public at the time. I'm not sure if he had many kids/offspring, so that could be a big factor to. I think a time will come where his name will come to the foreground, much like Rolls.
I don't think many of the Gracies liked the fact that he fought in quite a few fixed/worked matches in addition to real fights, since fixed matched paid better.
We can also look at Gastao Gracie and see that I don't think many black belts can claim lineage through him.

George fought a LOT way more than Helio. I wonder if that fact that George trained with so many different stylists, American Catch wrestlers, what was Luta Livre then, Jiu-jitsu/Judo Japanese guys, "ostracized" him somewhat from the pure water mythology? In addition, in Choque, I thinks it talks about Carlos taking a bid manager's cut from George's fights or something and George didn't like that. I think i'll have to go back and reread this stuff.

I have George Gracie tattooed on my left arm so whatever
