When Anderson Silva was submitted.

Both submissions, by Takase and Chonan were perfectly, and I mean, PERFECTLY timed.

Takase threw up his leg from side control just as Anderson attempted to sweep him, falling back into a textbook triangle.

And Chonan's submission...well, there's nothing else to say about this one, other than the MMA world might never ever see another flying inside heel hook. That one was simply amazing.

Random observation.

Anybody know what belt in bjj Silva was when he fought Chonan and Takase?

Takase fought the fight of his life as well. He kept Anderson on the ground and stayed busy enough to keep it there.
I thought Anderson was beat Chonan but a lot of people disagree. I still like Anderson in rematches with either of those guys but those fights prove that anyone can be beaten on any given night. Anderson rocks though. Great fighter to watch.

takase was slick

Those guys have like 3 subs between them in a ton of fights, and two of those are Silva.

"And Chonan's submission...well, there's nothing else to say about this one, other than the MMA world might never ever see another flying inside heel hook. That one was simply amazing."

Andy Aiello beat Matt Berman by flying heel hook in 2002.

Takase is actually a lot better than most give him credit for.

He's not much of a fighter, but its been pretty much confirmed by many Japanese fighters that he is one of the best grapplers in Japan.

Ryan Bow has stated that the first time he grappled with Takase he was so discouraged he felt like he knew nothing and had thoughts of quitting.

Maybe takase' biggest problem(why he gets no props)is cause he'll fight anyone. Regardless of disadvantage.

Chonan was getting his ass handed to him before the nutty sub. It was BECAUSE he was getting his ass handed to him that the threw the sub.

i don't recall chonan getting his ass kicked by anderson before the sub. i thought it was a pretty close fight.

While one could say that it is possible that we will see a sub like Chonan's again I think that's like saying after seeing fourteen ninjas beat up five polar bears with machine guns on a blimp we could possibly see that again. Possible, but not very likely.

I don't get how people can call chonans "flying heel hook" slick.

I mean, it looks awesome, but i'm pretty certain that's the not the sub he was going for.

Looks more like a kami basami (for those who don't know judo, scissor leg takedown), failed it but had excellent recovery time.

p.s.

we see flying and rolling leg locks all the time in mma.

I.E. IMANARI, MINOWA

Chonan was losing before the sub, but he wasn't losing by very much; it was a close match. It wouldn't have been unbelievable for him to rally and do well enough in the last round to pull out the decision even without the sub.

No. Takase's other big name wins are over Brennan and Newton, both by decision.

Silva wuld win in rematches. Plus he's a bit bigger now, Lutter's in trouble.

That is a funny ass post.  Nice one.

Samoa.

This is the Ryo Chonan submission vid...

I remembered thinking Anderson was ahead, even though Mauro and Bas were gushing over Chonan.

Watching the 3rd round again, it sure looked like Anderson was nailing Chonan with lots of bombs.
