Conor McGregor meeting with Vladimir Putin in 2018 has resurfaced amid Russia’s war on Ukraine.
Putin is currently at the centre of controversy as Russian forces launched a military assault on Ukraine after years of ongoing conflict between the two countries.
Several explosions have been reported in Kyiv with traffic jams forming around the capital city as residents attempt to flee the country.
McGregor met the Russian President at the World Cup final 2018, which took place at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
The pair shook hands and embraced whilst posing for pictures, but the UFC star was quickly warned by Putin’s security to take his arm off of the President’s shoulder.
And McGregor said it was an honour to meet one of the many great leaders in Putin at the time.
“Today I was invited to the World Cup final as a guest of Russian President Vladimir Putin,” wrote McGregor in the 2018 post.
"This man is one of the greatest leaders of our time and I was honoured to attend such a landmark event alongside him.
“Today was an honour for me Mr. Putin. Thank you and congratulations on an amazing World Cup.”
Some users were quick to point on the awkward moment in which McGregor realised he shouldn’t have put his arm around the President.
“McGregor: puts his arm around Putin. Security : So you have chosen death,” they commented.
Another added: “The way Conor puts his arm around his shoulder and then realised his mistake and his awkward adjustment…This is hilarious”.
Also in attendance for the World Cup final was McGregor’s fierce UFC rival, now-retired Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Nurmagomedov was in the stands for the match and was asked before his fight with McGregor what it was like to see his rival take a picture with the Russian President.
“How I feel [about this]? I don’t feel nothing because I never want to take picture with someone, it doesn’t matter…” he said.
