I was wondering what seminars you would like to attend most in the following disciplines?
BJJ:
Judo:
Muay Thai/Boxing:
Strength/Conditioning/Nutrition:
Kali:
My choices would be:
BJJ: Ryron Gracie, Rener Gracie, Rorion Gracie, Relson Gracie, Rickson Gracie, Ronaldo Jacare, Rodrigo Mederios, Ricardo de la Riva, Soneca, Spider Traven, and Eddie Bravo.
Judo: Steven Alphabet, Shozo Fukuda, Karo Parisian (for no gi)
Muay Thai/Boxing: Rodney King, Apedei (sp?)
Strength/Conditioning/Nutrition: Fedor
Kali: Sam Tendencia, Atienza brothers, Sayoc, and any student of Edgar Sulite that accurately convey his material
In case anyone is curious or would like to know my rationales from my choices above, I've trained with Ryron, Rener, Rorion, Relson, Rodrigo Mederios, de la Riva, Soneca, Spider Traven, Eddie Bravo, Steven Alphabet, and Shozo Fukuda.
I have NOT trained with Rickson, Jacare, Karo Parisian, Rodney King, Apedei, Fedor, Sam Tendencia, Atienza brothers, Sayoc, or Edgar Sulite disciples, but would like to veru much. Forum member Calbert has trained extensively with the Atienza brothers and formerly trained in a Sayoc association (as has Scott Elliot). I believe Burton (congrats on the bb btw :) ) has trained with Sam Tendencia, and most of the SBG guys I would assume have trained with Rodney King.
As far as I know, no one on this forum has trained with Rickson, Jacare, Apedei, Fedor, or Karo Parisian.

I've trained with Rickson. I was training with one of his brown belts (Mark
Eccard) from 95 - 97 and Rickson would come in and teach now and then.
He would teach the whole group and give each student about five minutes
of one on one everytime he came in. There were only about ten of us in
the class.
In 96 my brother and I trained with him for a three hour private blue belt
test.
MMA: I would like to add that the best MMA training I've ever seen was from the guys at North County Fight Club (Matt Stansell & Jeff Clark). They are BJJ black belts under Roy Harris, and Matt is the KOTC Welterweight champ. They also train Jason Lambert, who is 3-0 in the UFC LHW div. These guys have an MMA game that is AMAZING!!!! I would LOVE to go train MMA with them.
BJJ: Rickson, Marcelo Garcia, Oswaldo Alves, Carlos Gracie Jr
Muay Thai: Kru Yodtong,Gongtalanee & Samart Payakaroon, Apidej, Rob Kaman
Boxing: Freddie Roach, Justin Fortune (I attended a seminar and it was great!)
FMA: Tony Diego, Romy Macapagal (trained with his son), Ray Floro (trained with this guy),Christopher Ricketts, Yuli Romo, Sixto and Baste Carlos, Eric Knaus/Marc Denny,
Siciliano-I did a Marcelo Garcia private back in the day, pretty crafty and super nice guy and I even got to roll with him (don't ask, I don't want to embarass him by disclosing results of private rolling sessions)
I trained with Tony Diego Wednesday night. He really worked me hard, as did his top student Tom. Great workout, and Master Tony is magic in motion. I asked him (again- as I did in '94 and '96) if I could bring him to the U.S. He graciously denied, again.
Christopher Ricketts is an outstanding coach. He has trained me in the Philippines and in Los Angeles. He is living in San Diego now, and is available for privates and seminars. E-mail me at jkdu@hotmail.com if you need contact info.
Too bad Edgar Sulite isn't around anymore. He would put you through a rigorous workout, training the basics. Outstanding.
I did train with Sam Tendencia. He has a very interesting style, and he wasn't shy about letting me feel the rattan! Great training. He also gave the most amazing hilot massage. He fixed a lot of my injuries.
Rickson gave me my first lesson in BJJ, but I didn't get it at that time. I'd love to train with him again. Marcelo is great to train and roll with.
If you have the chance, train kickboxing with Dennis Alexio. He has a unique blend of PKA and Muay Thai. He can flick his foot around in rapid combos, but he turns his hip over when he lands the kick, giving the power of Muay Thai. Great hands too.
If I could roll with anybody tomorrow it would be Baret Yoshida. He is in San Diego too, and is amazing to roll with.
cool Burton! I would have loved to train (going by his videos) with Guru Edgar. I also had a much futile search of locating Guru Sam Tendencia (for both his Kali AND judo knowledge) but never could find him. I suppose he went back to the Phillipines was the last I heard. If you know anyone that could get a lead on him that would be fantastic. By the way, as old fan of your Inside Kung Fu column I'm glad you're writing for a much more favorite magazine of mine, Budo International. All the best,
- Steve

I'm glad you like Budo. It is a beautiful magazine. I helped Sam Tendencia move 3 times in about 6 months. He moved very often for unknown reasons. If you locate him, please let me know. Aloha!
will do Burton! No one seems to know where Guru Tendencia is, I've been searching for almost a year! Yes, Budo definitely has the most insightful articles on functional martial arts in my opinion. My other favorite for jiu-jitsu is Gracie Magazine now available in english.
