Wow, a Rickson thread- yea i know he doesn't get mentioned here much, but i thought i'd ask something about him.
I am neither a hugh fan, nor critic of Rickson Gracie; i'm just a fan of the sport and am curious to know his credentials. I know he is highly praised and regarded as one of the best exponents of JJ, but i honestly don't know who it is that praises him (names) and who he has tapped in competition/ training in JJ (NOT talking about NHB/MMA). I also have wondered is there anyone he could not tap, or who he believes is good.
Please only post if you can tell me of grappler who has x,y,z to say about him, or who he has been acknowledged of tapping/ not being able to tap. I know some douchbags will jump in to talk shit or whatever, but could those of you in the know please share your knowledge, as i now he has a reputation but because douchebags over hype/criticise him- it's not easy to discern what he has achieved.
The original threadstarter is asking, all jokes and teases aside and for serious responses, who Rickson had tapped in terms of the bignames such as Nog or saulo or Diego etc. etc., in the grappling arena/field. He made it specifically clear and pointed out not in the NHB/MMA sense.
Hitman Rob, u may have been better served posting this in the BJJ forums. And a Rickson thread doesn't survive too long without a jibe coming its way sooner or later :)

I can understand people being sceptical about Rickson unless they have rolled with him. But honestly if you cannot get to roll with him MMA or BJJ or you do not believe the guys who have, just buy some of the pre 1990 back yard vale tudo videos from Brazil, which show him smashing the sh*t out of all comers.
I refuse to believe I am the only one who has them.
Why would so many top level BJJ black belts say Rickson is on another level if he wasn't? Somebody has to be the best at BJJ and his name is Rickson Gracie.
maelWhirl, you obviously have reading skills beyond many of your forum peers. Thanks for your advice, but truth is i'll probably let my enquiry go no further than the constraints of this thread. I fully well knew that people on here would come to talk crap. I must confess, in a way i wanted that, as it means i can get a chuckle at people who try to belittle the claims made of nuthuggers, and disrespect a man they neither know, could accomplish a tenth of what he has, and who himself does not make a lot of these claims.
Have there been accounts of Rickson being unable to tap anyone? I think i remember a thread stating there were a couple of guys he did not tap (and vice versa).
I also recall reading that Mark Shultz (sp?) gave him a hard time.

Reportedly SHULTZ put Rickson in a CRADLE and held him down for about 20 mins before succumbing to an armbar/triangle. I've rolled with wrestlers and that doesn't surprise me. Wrestlers are really strong...catching them takes time...
what i hate about rickson critics at any level are 99% or the time they are a joke in life and in BJJ and the people who actually matter like lets say past BJJ champions never have a bad thing to say about RICKSONS' game or as a person (for the most part)!!! if u respect bjj as a sport or as a way of life RIckson is an idol and to be respected BOTTOM LINE!!!

I personally know very little about Rickson. What I do know is you never hear any one who has rolled with him say anything other than he is the greatest ever. Countless world champs have said it. Unless you have irrefutable proof of him sucking against someone, leave him be. I never hear of the man tooting his own horn and he is extremely approachable.
AJM i hear ya i dont get the hostility against the guy he is a great guy and totally humble in so many aspects of his life and accolplishments i think thats his strongest attribute sooo what the guy might have made some comments that makes it seems like he is the best ever and whatever but anyone who is great at soemthing has a bit of an attitude and swagger...i think wed all be little boastful...
These discussions are ridiculous, but what the hell. A training partner and I got a 1 hr private with him in the mid 90's. We both had more wrestling than bjj experience but we were probably new blue belt level.
We did some work on guard passing, triangle defense and then just rolled. Technically perfect, but what struck me was how smooth his transitions and submissions were. Like wrestling water. Better than anyone I've ever rolled with for what that is worth (not much!) considering my skill level.
He also seemed to be a genuinely good guy, humble and down to earth.
Isn't he 40 something now and just a teacher? His competition days are probably behind him so any questions about who he can beat now are pretty pointless.
