oldnslow - I'm also so old that my great-grandmother told me about seeing an automobile for the first time and couldn't figure out where the horse was that was making it move.
That seems more a function of how little time cars have actually been around. 4 generations can easily cover 100+ years.
My grandfather grew up in the countryside (Victoria, Australia) and told me the story of how the whole town came out to see the first car. They all knew what it was, and had read about it, but it was a big thing to see one in person.
