I am admittedly pretty ignorant of his career. The only fight I saw of his was when he got kicked in the face and knocked out from the guard by Anderson (which I just caught on youtube after hearing Sonnen claim that Okami was winning his first fight with Anderson up to that point...righttttttt).
What are some of the highlights of his career? Someone please bring me up to speed on the man Dana White calls the greatest fighter to ever come out of Japan.
this is google searchbar worthy question not thread worthy.
Not to be an obnoxious cock or anything, but how the hell do you post on the UG for so many years and not know who Yushin Okami is?
i was about to ask teh same thing. okami has been at the threshold of a title shot for like the last four years, admittedly he's not the most dominant or exciting or well-promoted fighter, but the only fight of his you have seen is an old fight in a tiny promotion on youtube?
wait, are you one of those guys that signed up really recently but was awarded a 01 by staff?
how do you get rewarded an 01 by staff? ive noticed people get critisized for having newer accounts. hasnt happened to me but i see it often.
lol - maybe because the last 4 years I've been getting to the bar late and only catching the second half of the UFC? I used to watch every single fight diligently from like 1993 to 2003, but I can't keep that shit up for almost 20 years now. I don't know about his career at all - I admit it!
"wait, are you one of those guys that signed up really recently but was awarded a 01 by staff?"
yeah, that seems like something I'd care about lol. No, I was AT UFC 3 in person, took privates from Grandmaster Helio and Carlson before they passed away, lessons from Rickson, Rorion, Relson, Royce, Royler, Ryron, Rener, Marcelo Garcia, trained judo in Japan etc. etc. etc...thai boxing with Ajarn Chai since 1993, Kali instructor under Guru Dan Inosanto...never fought mma, just a fan
just goes to show join dates don't mean anything...
Okami is a good but ..... so was Thales Leites
"just goes to show join dates don't mean anything..."
lol at the backlash from admitting you haven't followed a certain fighter. The educated aren't afraid to admit they don't know something.

ok hey, i was just asking, no accusations intended. anyway Okami is a big, strong, well-rounded fighter. He doesn't really stand out as an elite striker but it is effective and that combined with his ability to stop the TD or sub tends to be how he wins fights, on points for strikes and control. After his loss to Chael he went to train wrestling with Sonnen and apparently really improved that facet of his game.
If he beats Silva I'm betting it will be with Chael's gameplan
sorry, girlfriend is driving me crazy so I'm a bit on edge lol...thanks for the break down. I've got to start getting to the UFCs earlier! I've been consistantly going but only catching the last half of each show the last few years.
btw not that it's important but a thread of mine asking a bunch of questions (basically a variation on this one - but saying what the hell is aikido? lol) is at the top of the traditional martial arts forum that's dated from 2006, for those who doubt my identity lol
Okami is top 5 MW in the world. A relentless wrestler and a legit contender for Andersson.
you should really just check out his wikipedia page. the list of guys he's beat is really pretty impressive with a few losses to top 3 guys only in the last five years, the UFC has just never marketed him heavily... probably because a champ with his style that can't speak english is seen as somewhat undesirable, no matter how much you want to capture the japanese market.
He's talented and as I said well-rounded but he's also methodical and not flashy like Anderson, or charismatic like GSP.
AlexanderTheGreatJJ - Notable wins: Belcher, Swick, Evan tanner, mark munoz, Nate marquardt <img src="/images/phone/post_tag.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>
also the underrated macdonald, tuf alumnus rory singer, lister who is a grappling challenge for any fighter, and the goat thompson was a much tougher guy to beat back then.
Only the new ULTIMATE FIGHTING MW CHAMP, that's who

thanks everyone, hey I've been watching for almost 20 years now - sooner or later I'm bound to ask a stupid question lol...I honestly don't remember seeing him fight. I read his wikipedia page before I posted this but wanted to get an educated opinion/summary of what the deal is with him because I thought maybe I was missing something due to the Dana comment (not that I believed such a ridiculous comment lol-Sakuraba anyone? And at least 10 other candidates I would think would be better than Okami... Let alone if we engage in the difficulty of comparing different eras, theres of course Kimura, Mifune, Kano, Yukio Tani, COUNT KOMA, etc. from back in the day).
The UFC not marketing him well (as someone mentioned) makes sense why I just didn't pay much attention. I probably have even seen him fight before but just was dozing off or trying to hit on the waitress or something before the fighters that I usually follow fought lol.
he's basically a can. has no chance of beating Anderson whatsoever
