why all the complaining?

I understand why everyone wasn't too excited before this card...but I don't really understand why everyone is still complaining AFTER UFC 55. This was a highly entertaining card! I don't know what more you could ask for in terms of action.

Riggs vs Lytle: Good bout, good skills shown by both guys. Riggs reminded us why he is so dangerous from the top. His explosiveness from the top is right up there with Loiseau. His elbow from the bottom was set up perfectly. Beautiful strike.

Babalu vs Sonnen: great fight! I don't think anyone could be disappointed with this one. Back and forth battle where both guys had their moments. Chael showed a ton of heart gutting it out through that heelhook. Babalu showed why he's one of the most underrated 205ers, and that he definitely belongs in the top 10. Even in a losing effort, Sonnen had a good enough showing that I think everyone would like to see him back.

Forrest vs Elvis: this fight wasn't pretty, but man was it ever entertaining! Both guys showed heart, and some decent striking skills. Forrest is perhaps the most entertaining fighter in the sport to watch. I felt Elvis had a pretty good showing too. Everyone's crying early stoppage, but for Christ's sake Forrest dropped him CLEAN and he hit his head hard on the cage. I'm sure Elvis would have liked to continue, but we can't complain about EVERY stoppage. There was nothing wrong with this stoppage.

Hinkle vs Gannon: Yes, Gannon was a disappointment. But Hinkle came to finish. He was highly aggressive from the top and did tons of damage. If you like to see blood, you got your wish. Not a great fight, but a whole lot better than a slow, boring lay and pray decision. Can't really complain. And Hinkle gives us at least a new HW to watch for in a division that is really in need of some fresh blood.

Arlovski vs Buentello: Quick, clean KO! And people STILL boo? I don't know, maybe everyone missed it, but that was a beautiful, CLEAN punch RIGHT on the button, and Buentello was still out on his feet for a good minute or so stumbling around the cage. Yes, it happened fast, but they gave us about a million slo-mo replays. UFC champ delivers a beautiful KO, what's there to boo about?

As for the prelims, they are always just a bonus anyway.

Sakara looked sharp and exciting, Bearclaw showed heart and toughness if not skill. It's really too bad the way it ended, because Sakara deserved the win for sure. Maybe UFC needs to adopt an 'accidental foul rule', where as long as 1 full round is complete, they go to the cards. Because a technical draw really stinks in a fight that was so one sided, especially when the losing fighter delivers the foul that causes the fight to be stopped. Even with the disappointing finish, Sakara should give people something to look forward to.

Rivera vs Hallman: This is the only fight of the night that I think people can really complain about, because neither fighter showed up. However, it was still an entertaining an action packed fight, at least for the first half. There was plenty of damage done. Hallman was terrible, I don't know how a guy with such an impressive resume can come in and look so bad. But Rivera was almost just as bad. Hallman was BEGGING to be finished for 2 whole rounds, and Rivera just sat there and threw one shot at a time. I would say I'm more disappointed in Rivera for showing lack of killer instinct. Even still, this fight had plenty of drama.

Pe de Pano vs Kunihara: Only got to see clips so there's not a ton to say about this one, but again, a new HW to watch for= good news.

Overall, we saw KO's, subs, action, blood, wild slugfests, drama...seriously, especially given the lackluster card, how can you complain about this? This was a highly entertaining UFC!

The only two good fights were the first two. I was beginning to think "Hey, maybe this event won't be so bad after all."

Fuck, I was wrong.

"UFC champ delivers a beautiful KO, what's there to boo about?"

They booed because they didn't see the punch land at first. No one did. Then they booed because the fight lasted a whopping 15 seconds and it wasn't a spectacular finish (like a Rumina flying armbar, or Tito dropping Tanner on his head). It was just a right hand KO. If that happened at the end of round 1 after some nice exchanges, it would've been a nice finish. As is, it felt like we didn't even get to see the main event.

Sakara looked good, but it was still a one-sided, boring round followed by a kick to the nuts. I wanna see Sakara again. That just wasn't a good fight.

Forrest is the man, but again, it just wasn't a good fight. Wasn't terrible, just not really interesting, either.

Babalu, Riggs, and Lytle are all fighters I will gladly watch anytime. I hope Zuffa brings Lytle back. I also hope they really give Babalu a big push. He might be the most well rounded fighter in the UFC right now. He's like a heavier version of GSP or Hughes, except Babalu also can submit you from the guard (which we haven't seen from either of those bad ass WW's).

I don't care to ever see Gannon again. Hinkle will stick around just because UFC really has no one else at heavyweight, but I don't see him making any waves in the division. He'd get beat by everyone Arlovski has been beating recently.

I said it before the event, signing Pe de Pano was a GREAT move by Zuffa. As Joe Rogan would say, if you're complaining because he was making his MMA debut, SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE! His BJJ accomplishments are reason enough. That said, we still didn't get to see his whole fight, and it looked to be the most exciting prelim of the 3. Boo.

I am excited for Hinkle and Pe De Pano! I hope they shake up the division.

Pe De Pano may be the next NOG! Nog was thrown around like crazy, but you should not discount his skills.

Same deal with Pe De Pano

When you pay 35$ to see the superbowl of MMA you should see the best of the best... do you think that last night was that best of the best?

but, how can you complain about a KO just because it happens early? Is Arlovski supposed to just go easy on him for awhile so that we can see a longer fight? Personally, I love a quick KO. When a guy can come out and KO his opponent with 1 punch right off that bat, that's special.

Ryan, I know you are really into the finer aspects of the sport, but I'm surprised that you're not more appreciative of a good ol' fashioned slugfest as well. Forrest vs Elvis is the best type of fight to watch, because as you're watching you get the feeling that either guy could end it at any moment! When it's a one sided fight and you know who's going to win right away, that's not so special. When it's so evenly matched that both guys have neutralized each other, I can appreciate the talent, but it can get a bit boring because you know neither guy is going to be able to finish. But Forrest vs Elvis was not like that at all...both guys had huge moments, both appeared almost ready to go at times. Both landed huge shots. Great drama, great action, great fight!

I always laugh when someone starts a thread to complain about complainers...the irony of it is funny.

You should make a thread about it Jacktown Judoka.

bradu, it's different if the KO is quick and the match at least appears even, but with the arlovski vs buentello fight, it was a mismatch on paper and a mismatch in the ring, no one wants to pay to see the old joe louis tomato can of the month club... when the fights appear to be extremely predictable and they end up going as everyone thought they would (the favorites winning 8-0 in this card) it's a letdown and bad matchmaking... and as it's been stated, the UFC appears to be heading the way of boxing, where they will try and pad a fighters record before giving him a realistically challenging match... that's not the UFC's job...

"I always laugh when someone starts a thread to complain about complainers...the irony of it is funny."

That's a good point. I thought of that while I was typing, too. But my complaint is far more legit than theirs. ;)

LOL @ Making a thread complaining about complainers complaining..

People are complaining because the card quality is getting progressively worse while the PPV price slowly goes up. The UFC is counting on people such as you in order to keep doing this.

"LOL @ Making a thread complaining about complainers complaining.."

If you do it I'm probably going to have to complain about it.

"but, how can you complain about a KO just because it happens early? Is Arlovski supposed to just go easy on him for awhile so that we can see a longer fight?"

No. It's not Arlovski's fault. I'm not blaming him, man. But there's still no drama in it. It didn't feel satisfying, especially for a main event.

"Ryan, I know you are really into the finer aspects of the sport, but I'm surprised that you're not more appreciative of a good ol' fashioned slugfest as well. Forrest vs Elvis is the best type of fight to watch, because as you're watching you get the feeling that either guy could end it at any moment!"

I don't mind slugfests, but that wasn't really a slugfest. Forrest vs. Bonnar was a slugfest. They stood their ground and threw bombs. Forrest and Elvis did not do that. They would throw wild ass punches, one guy would land, and the other would back away. Repeat process. Actually, Elvis had some good technique to his strikes. He wasn't throwing wild ass punches. Anyway, it wasn't a bad fight, but it wasn't a good one either. I also didn't feel like either guy could end it. Elvis didn't have the power to finish Forrest standing. I knew it was only a matter of time before a wild bomb from Forrest landed. It was more like "So, when will it end?" rather than "Man, I don't know who will win!"

the card turned out better than expected, but I'm still glad I didn't shell out to go see this one live-the first UFC I've missed where I had a realistic chance to go. (I can't afford to go to Vegas) I thought the Arlovski fight was great while it lasted, although I was shocked Paul went out that quick. Arlovski is a monster! I was truly disappointed by Hallman, who I had been clamoring for a return on many posts here. He showed that he no longer has what it takes to compete at this level, and it was a big letdown. Rivera can go, too. Not impressed by the total lack of finishing power.

TTT

People should be complaining about that new piece of shit announcer who can't talk at all unless it's scripted.

I agree, he sucked. It wasn't that he felt uncomfortable on the mic on short notice, it's that he didn't seem to know anything about MMA.

Good analysis Brad. All in all there was something for everyone. There were many entertaining moments, even with very few big names on the card.

"entertaining" - yes
"historical/significant" - no

Any "shake up" in the rankings post UFC 55? (Joe Riggs at 170?)
Any "legend" making matches? No

It's like watching a toughman competition: very entertaining, but no effect on the boxing rankings.

I thought it was the worst UFC ever.
