Why are the Dutch so obsessed with hard sparring?

Uhtred Ragnarson -
Dallasitzer - They, Mike's in particular is notorious for brutal sparring. Notice how they don't care about pairing based on weight class? You walk in there and spar with a 6'5 240lb monster and your fucking life will change. Ridiculous!

Are there any gyms who are trying to break the mold and do things differently?

From what I understand Thai gyms are heavy on the pads, light in sparring which allows guys to live normal lives outside of fighting. Comment?

Thais spar light they dont need to punish each other.

Or beat each other up. most of them have been fighting since 5 years old some younger.

some of them also fight once or twice a week which is insane.

Then gamble most of that fight purse off then fight again repeat.

You can kind of tell by the coaching … im betting the smart coaches have adapted. Jackson, crouch mma lab, Not sure about AMC because Hume is so old school but hes smart so you would think hes adapated. Meat head coaching like AKA, brazilian camps, still around.

thais, in general, dont spar hard like this

my muay thai gym follows the Thai way...we have "hard sparring" but only go "hard" to the body and legs, NEVER the head (of course lighter punches to the head)

our stable of pro and amateur fighters over the years has a great winning record, many wins coming against guys from gyms that are known to spar really hard

Was that Murthel Groenhart you're talking about?

My old trainer had me spar hard 24/7. I look back on it and cringe.

FWIW, he's now training under Hooft lol. So much for light sparring.

wiggum - Anyone know how some of the older dutch guys are doing? Punch drunk? Bas obviously seems fine. Do they seem healthy?

Bas wasn't a Kickboxer.

Peter Aerts isn't doing the greatest from what I understand.

Yes, Bas is a kickboxer.

Was he? Like came up thru the KB circuit? Or was he a karate turned mma guy?

Oh good lord, friends…time for some fun history research for you all! Please get to it.

Yes, Bas Rutten was a Dutch Kickboxer prior to fighting MMA. Even without knowing his career background, his movements and technique reveal it.

Maybe people are confused because of how inexorably tied Karate is to Dutch kickboxing. That's a fascinating larger story that explains how Dutch style differs from Muay Thai, one that I didn't know much about until meeting and training with Stefan Berkenpas

If he looks like he is 15 years old and 150 lbs, probably.

Bas was a kick boxer, but he turned to Pancrase so didn't absorb nearly as much head trauma.

yeah, im not aying that the dutch way of sparring is any worse than the light sparring methods, in terms of learning technique, getting a feel of the fight, and just becoming a better fighter

obv it has been working wonders for the Dutch kickboxers over the years

diff strokes for different folks

but yeah, that whole brain trauma thing

i agree with "light" punches to the head, bc you just have to.......

IMO going hard with body shots and leg kicks prepare your body and mind for a fight more effectively than taking hard shots to the head

i dont know about you guys, but when im getting my ass beat by my training partner and he is lighting me up, i'd always give up head shots instead of receiving another liver kick/punch

i jsut dont think that taking shots to the head "conditions" you for it the same way taking shots to the body and legs do

I do worry for Overeem later in life

He's such a nice guy too, in addition to being an amazing fighter (imo top 2 heavyweight of all time, if not the greatest).

Fucking drain Bamage.

Rammon Dekkers died suddenly a few years ago, in his 40s

Unsure if his fighting career was a factor

I’d hate to speak ill about the dead, not to mention literally my most favorite combat athlete of all time, but wasn’t Ramon on something and that’s what caused his death?

Yeah it's surprising actually. I went to Amsterdam once for kickboxing and we went to another gym that was famous, turns out it was a karate based kickboxing style and it's actually very popular. Not as much Thai as you'd think.

Been to Thailand too and the Thais spar soon light. The other white folk at the gym… Not so much. Had a huge Russian almost give me a concussion because he got mad.
