Why can't Bellator and the UFC coexist?

"Can't we all just get along?"

Anybody else wish Dana would just leave Bellator alone? Or do you enjoy the UFC buying out all healthy competition?

Bellator is great on many levels. First it gives the fighters breeding grounds so to say. Second, they really do have a stacked lineup of fighters now. Third, the UFC runs a ppv model whereas Bellator is cable TV only.

I'm a huge fan of Bellator personally. They have given so many opportunities to fighters trying to make a living doing what they love. Plus more fights = more entertainment for us fans! Phone Post

They don't have a choice but to coexist.

They can, Bellator is #2, UFC #1.

As long as Bellator realizes that, there won't be a problem.

There can only be none

Take a look at Bellator's roster on either their website or their App for IPhone or Android. So much talent! I was legitimately surprised! Phone Post

They can coexist just fine, but it'll always be irritating that we can't see guys like Chandler and Curran against the other elites in their division.

They're competitors in a CAPITALIST environment, and a modified free market at that.

You will never have a two competitor (relevant ones) get along. You see what happens when there is three (Strikeforce) and now that there is two it only gets uglier.

It is akin to when Nintendo, Sega and Sony were competing and Sega had to bite the dust and Nintendo and Sony became bitter rivals in the same vein. Now we have Sony and Microsoft as bitter rivals and Nintendo despite it's numbers becoming the odd man out but slowly because the market has grown to the point where three companies can survive. How long, time will tell but MMA is a two competitor market right now and they are in a system designed to generate animosity.

I personally can't stand Rebney. Dude is a douche on many levels. At least with Dana White, he doesn't try to hide what he is really like. Can't say the same about Rebney though, imho.

I also wouldn't care if Bellator ceased to exist tomorrow. I would feel bad for the fighters and employees but that is about it. I can't remember the last time I got excited for one of their cards and felt the need to tune in too watch it. I enjoy watching some of the fighters but on the grand scheme of things, there just aren't very many I feel emotionally invested with.

I hope they both do exist. The more free fights on tv the better. Phone Post

Zuffa will try their best to eliminate them.

Clearly they can coexist. They have been coexisting for nearly five years and both of their businesses have continued to grow.

As far as why Dana can't leave them alone ... he does for the most part. The only time he talks about Bellator is when someone asks him about Bellator. Part of Dana's shtick as a promoter is that he will answer any question the press asks him. He's not going to say 'no comment' over and over again when reporters ask him about Bellator/SpikeTV. He's going to give his opinion, and his opinions are often quite acerbic.

I don't think Zuffa TRIES to eliminate anyone. They just pick up the pieces after their competitors have already ruined themselves. The only competitor that Zuffa has actively tried to bury was Affliction.

I can't think of many instances of the UFC going out of their way to bring Bellator down. They'll sign fighters that want out of Bellator but that's a good thing because we get to see them fight better competition.

UFC events are often scheduled much further in advance so as long as Bellator tries not to go head to head with them the UFC has no real need to crush them.

This.

He gets asked about them and he gives an answer, he can have a 30 minute conversation with a reporter but he gets asked about Bellator and thats what they run with and thats what gets printed.  they make it seem like out of the blue Dana just decided to say oh by the way Bellator sucks and isnt as good as the UFC.

They can and should co-exist. Industry always prospers when there is competition. Phone Post

The problem with Bellator is no, they don't create a breeding grounds for fighters except to stay in Bellator. The only way to leave Bellator is to either get injured (see Ulysses Gomes), become Champion for several years, or to lose.

The reason Bellator and the UFC can't coexist is because Bellator does not know its place. I'm not saying they should be an outright feeder to the UFC, but if they don't use someone for a while, or if someone is Champion for like 20 months and 3 defenses and runs out their contract, they should allow them to go if they want, rather than try to ensnare them.

What's even worse is using a guy on an undercard once, then not using them again, and then when that guy goes on to be successful elsewhere or beats one of Bellator's stars outside the organization they try and pull all sorts of legal shit to try and force them back. See Tyson Nam or Jonathan Brookins. And then there's the Eddie Alvarez mess which is disgusting, does Bellator no good in the long-term, and basically just sends a message to fighters saying "if you become successful, don't you DARE try to leave!"

So no, until they change their business model I'll continue to wish failure on them.

That's not going out of their way to bring Bellator down. That's normal competition. The UFC signs guys from Bellator, Bellator signs guys from the UFC, and they both compete for prospects from other organizations.

The UFC has never gone out of their way to blacklist Bellator from venues, or scheduled last-minute cards to fuck with Bellator's ratings like they did with Affliction. They pretty much ignore them unless someone goads Dana into making a comment.

WFA they had a vendetta against also... was kinda quiet since they got the WEC at the same time. Strikeforce they went after also.
