Why did Walt care about Hank so much?

In the last season Walter gets pissed when Saul suggests whacking Hank because he knows he's Heisenberg.

It's like.. who did Walter actually care about on the show besides his two kids and Jesse? He didn't even give a fuck about Jesse's girlfriend, or two innocent children.. one he poisoned by his own hand.

He comes full on evil, and yet he see's Hank as family? That guy kinda teases Walt relentlessly, always alphaing him in some way, and he didn't even give a shit about his wife that much. He just wanted to be with his kids.

So Walter kills a bunch of people to get where he is but the last one guy who can stop him? Nope

His son looked up to him and he was probably his best friend...

Would you kill someone in your family? Whether you got along or not? It ruined Michael Corleone.

As fucked up as Walts morality became as the series progressed he still had a moral compass. What was family and he was a good man. He wasn’t in the drug trade and he wasn’t a villain. That made a difference.

There was an underlying battle for Walt to either accept what he had become or fight to try and hang on to some sort of human decency. He found something that he was the best at, while making good money. This is after he watched his previous life and business partners get ridiculously wealthy from a project he was involved with.

Walt wanted to be a monster as much as he wanted to be a good dad. One is just a little more exhilarating.

This - Walt knew one way or another he wasn't going to be in his son's life anymore in the near future and Hank was a good person who would be a mentor/father type figure when he was gone.

Hank; the only good guy in the whole fucking series.

possible in life to be both honestly. alot of people are.

you can be a really nice pos also. crocodile smile and all.

Interesting theories. I always thought it was because he knew that Hank was married to an insufferable shoplifting bitch and for someone trapped in a that kind of emotional prison, living is a worse punishment than death.

Gomez was the only good dude in the series. Hank was an asshole.

Gomez was a minor character.  Hank was the only major character that was good guy.  Asshole?  100%.  Cared about the right things?  100%

Agree - mostly.

He went out of his way to try and make Walt look weak in front of his own family. He was way too “try hard Alpha”, and it was pretty amusing to see him crippled by panic attacks at times.

He may also have been intimidated by Walt’s sheer intelligence, so he had to overcompensate with all the Alphaing nonsense to make himself feel better. Dudes who act like that are often very weak and insecure about some things.

We all wanted the heroin junkie to die. Hank was the only real man on the show.

The entire lie he built was “I’m doing this for my family.”

He kills Hank and his whole foundation cracks.

I agree. What I was really saying is what you just said. I didn’t mean he’s a flat out negative entity. He is right in a lot of ways. He’s also a dick head.

Jessies girlfriend was druggie trash. Good riddance.

Walt didnt kill anyone who didnt have it coming.

Walt resented and admired parts of Hank equally. He always saw him as part of his core family, like a brother who always clashed with your personality but you love nonetheless.

Walt rationalized his actions as being beneficial for his family since the beginning, but Hank dying in front of his face shattered that lie.

That’s an interesting take. I like it.

Someone else made a good point that didn’t occur to me when I watched the show which was that Walt’s son looked up to Hank and that Hank was likely going to be the best father figure left in Jr’s life when Walt died.

Maybe also Walt really did have some good left and saw Hank as being pure and good and as such couldn’t kill him. There was no way to say that he deserved it. Killing Hank would have been only bad and only to serve Walt’s interests.

Could it be a combination of the above?
