Anyone have this thought throughout his dominating performance? He wasn't having much success from side mount and frank was able to get in some knees. I hoped he would move to mount and drop some bombs.
He looked to be controlling frank on the ground from sidemount. So why fix something that isn't broken?
Renzo was avoiding the full mount. Less likely to get reversed.
I believe that was the reason too ribz
Absolutley , he mounts = he gets reveresed. = he looses
First time I have ever seen seen the guy on top of sidemount take more damage than the guy on bottom.
Franks is too explosive from there. He has a strong bridge and roll mount escape.
Also, from Videos I seen, Renzo has a series of moves that he works from side mount. He goes for a head triangle (which it looked like he was trying to work momentarily last night), then transitions to an armbar. It's like a 2-4 move series he works, and noticed it in one of his Pride fights. He should add some elbows to the side control though.
"He wasn't having much success from side mount"
He might have if he had bothered to do anything at all from that position other than lie there.
Frank has explosive mount escapes, that's why.
"Since Frank Shamrock never heard of shrimping away to attempt getting guard"
LOLZ
"Since Frank Shamrock never heard of shrimping away to attempt getting guard"
That must be anti-uij-ustij.
Frank was in the turtle position. It's just that he was a turtle on it's back being suffocated.
Someone with a good side mount is very hard to just "shrimp" your way out. Especially if they are just laying there and not being active and keeping thier hips flat.
...or having your arms in whatever places they happen to be..
Also why didn't Renzo punch/elbow/knee/say mean hurtful words/eat a donut or do pretty much anything else from side mount.
If not for Frank's constant knees I was afraid he was gonna fall asleep there....
From "About Renzo Gracie" from poster JP Monaco:
"One thing worth mentioning is that Renzo was setting up different attacks when he was on the side mount. Most people on the forum are saying he was just laying there, but that's simply not true. Shamrock is tough and experienced, so of course it's not easy to submit him in a few seconds. Renzo was playing tight and just waiting for Frank to make a mistake.
If you know some Jiu-Jitsu or grappling, and if you know Renzo, it's easy to see how he was going back and forth on the attacks. Here's a tip: check out his fight against Maurice Smith. Same situation, except that Smith tried to muscle his way out and made a lethal mistake that cost him the fight.
This fight is available on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xe46MmMp6-0
Back to yesterday's fight: Renzo fights to finish, and when he saw that Frank had a poor guard and no resources to escape the sidemount, he immediatelly focused on submissions. Sure, he could start pounding Frank, after all he had the dominant position, but Frank is tough and even if he got hurt he would still keep fighting. That would not win the fight for Renzo and would only make him waste energy.
You may or may not like his strategy, but to say he was just laying there is just incorrect."
franks pretty good at escaping mount. i think renzo saw that in videos. he could hold frank in sidemount all day
"Renzo was playing tight and just waiting for Frank to make a mistake."
So if Frank had stopped working, it would have been the MMA equivalent of a staring contest, with each guy lying motionless "waiting for the other to make a mistake"? Awesome.
"he immediatelly focused on submissions."
Only in his mind, apparently.
"You may or may not like his strategy, but to say he was just laying there is just incorrect."
Actually, it's pretty accurate.
