Why Do Rednecks Vote Against Their Own Interests?

From my anecdotal experience typically redneck hillbillies Florida crackers vote republican even though they, their siblings, and offspring use entitlement programs started by Democrats which is retarded.

My ex's (a BDJ), redneck dad, watches NASCAR (strangely hates football) smokes weed, does Molly, and X with his kids, wife works in public transportation for 30 yrs (progressive program), and he hasn't worked in decades is on Social Security Disability, (Crohn's).

His daughters receive food stamps/SNAP, Welfare/cash assistance for each one of their kids, one daughter is married to Illegal immigrant, but he told them, and their friends if they were planning to vote to vote for Romney in 2012' I almost spit out my beer when I heard him say that...

I just don't get it Phone Post 3.0

maybe the problem is in the fact that most(99%of them) republicans are not 100% against social programs

but are just in favor of more responsible social subsities

and many see the issue of being Pro Life, Pro Gun, and other main stream GOP issues as more important than "eliminating" social programs.

Ok my ex had a Abortion bout 10yrs ago and they never go to church never talk religion so how do you rationalize that?

I come from a democratic voting pro-life pro-gun went to church every Sunday, Sunday school, main service, revivals, my dad even sang on a contemporary gospel group, but whenever Reagan or Bush 41 came on to addressed the nation or in news segments, he'd flip the tv off and curse up a storm lol what does that make him? If you're mentally lazy its easier to just believe whatever the people around you believe. Usually the party line is set by the higher ups who are usually getting something on the back end. They tell their mouth pieces on the news stations and in the local parties.

Single issue voters?

Romney's opponent was one of them coloreds you might recall.

A guy named Joe Bageant wrote a really interesting book on this topic a few years back. It's called "Deer Hunting With Jesus."

Here's a good review from Amazon that summarizes the book:

"Bageant is not some liberal academician who just helicoptered in Margaret Mead-like for a brief, notebook-in-hand stay with the indigenous peoples of Winchester, Virginia. Rather, DEER HUNTING WITH JESUS describes the author's return to live in his hometown after a thirty-year absence in such far-flung left wing havens as Boulder, CO , Eugene, OR, and the Coeur d'Alene (ID) Indian Reservation. What he discovers is a town far different than the one of his boyhood, a place where "average folks" are uneducated, hopelessly parochial and uninformed, terrified of getting sick, and anesthetized by materialism, religious fundamentalism, and eight hours a day of television. They spend most of their lives resentful of "elites" and the rich, but resigned to their lot, all the while living on an economic precipice.

"In each chapter, Bageant tackles one aspect of rural, working class life: Republicanism, debt and bankruptcy, gun ownership, religion, allegiance to the military and military ideals, health care, and education and the American lifestyle as delivered by Wal-mart and the mass media. In almost every instance, however, the author combines exposition and revealing statistics with highly personal accounts based on the lives of Winchester's citizenry. From the first pages at the Royal Lunch to the book's closing back there again, Bageant tells his story through the townspeople. We meet Dink Lamp and Pootie, the karaoke-loving Dottie, local rich guy Bobby Fulk, Woody McCauley and his wife Ruth, Tommy Ray, longtime friend Tom Henderson, old high school flame and Rubbermaid factory worker Carolyn, and Joe's demon-exorcising, Baptist pastor brother, Mike. In his one major diversion out of Winchester to the nearby town of Fort Ashby (WV), Bageant relates the fascinating story of that town's native daughter and serial Abu Gharib abuser, Lynndie England. Some of their stories are illustrative, while others are stunning in their subject's naivete and a few are simply heartbreaking. Bageant tells their stories, especially those of Dottie and Ruth, with a touching tenderness and humanity, and without a trace of condescension. In the end, most of Winchester's working class are simply economic victims of the broader American society, most fooled by corporations, government leaders, and the media into believing they are living the average Joe's American Dream.

"Of course, Bageant's imposed reality on these individuals tells the real tale, the one few if any in Winchester comprehend. Working class America is grossly undereducated and overfed, hypnotized to near catatonia by television and right wing talk radio, underpaid but duped into believing that unions will only worsen their plight, and lacking in health care and retirement benefits. The lives of many of the people in DEER HUNTING WITH JESUS will ultimately be dictated by events and forces outside their control and understanding. Yet they march along in political lockstep, conservative Republican to the core without knowing why, responding with emotion rather than reason to religious and political appeals designed for just that purpose."

Trust - Probably for a similar reason that so called "pro gun" democrats vote against their interests. Phone Post 3.0
...while saying democrats are for the working man. Phone Post 3.0

Op here is a thought. Maybe he does not even know the difference which is a better excuse then you thinking voting primarily one or the other is ever going to make a difference in this country. Keep on fighting the good fight. I'm sure one of those teams is eventually going to win the race..... Phone Post 3.0

Why do you feel you know their interests better than they do?

libtards love the line "voting against your own best interest" because it puts them in a position to say they should make the choice for others.

Speaking of voting against your own best interest, how has that worked out in the ghettos of St. Louis, Detroit, Atlanta, SE DC, etc... Seems anywhere Leftist Gov Co runs things for decades we find an 3rd word shit hole. How about the failure of sku high taxes, socialist entitlements, absurd spending, etc? Shocking considering the absolute failure of socialism over the past 100 years, who would have thought?!. Idiots.

I've given up understanding US politics. Everywhere else people are talking about economic policy, social welfare, education, social mobility, assisting the less fortunate and you guys are talking about "how many machine guns do I need" and if you think that number is greater than zero then you also believe in a deity and want to abolish helping the poor. Too confusing. Too polarised.

I never understood why Union guys voted for anti-gun rights Democrats. Most of the Union guys I know are pretty blue collar dudes who like guns. This excludes the teacher's union though.

So clearly all deep-red states are pictures of perfection? Alabama, Mississippi, Kansas...

It's pretty simple. Calvin Coolidge said "the business of America is business." American politics is about rich businessmen trying to maximize their own wealth and freedom. If this process also happens to benefit the larger public, that's a bonus. If not, too bad.

Issues of guns, race, and religion are primarily means to this end. You gotta find a way to divide the plebs and keep them bickering with each other rather than noticing that no matter who loses in American society, the same people always win.

Look at poor Munk. His brain has been completely scrambled by propaganda. His posts sound like he's having some kind of conservative seizure.

But he'll vote for tax breaks for billionaires until his dying breath, and die with a shit-eating grin on his face as he floats up to meet Jesus, knowing he helped save America from "socialism" and "atheism."
