Not talking about anyone in particular. But it the UFC was so concerned with putting on great fights, why do they sign these guys in the first place?
No one would be clamoring for these guys to come to the UFC if they were laying on people for decisions in Bellator or OneFC.
Why does the UFC waste their money signing these guys? Not talking about guys who do work from top position, talking about guys who lay on their opponent and hang on for dear life. It isn't exciting to anyone, not even hardcore MMA fans.
Also, Joe Silva needs to learn not to match strikers vs wrestlers unless it's a #1 contender or title fight. Match-ups make wars.
Ben Askren is a perfect example. The ufc knows he is incredibly dominant but boring and puts on snooze fest fights. Why don't they take the approach towards him with every lay and prayer?
Because americans love them.

As much as I hate to watch them and I agree, it's no different than an elite level striker.
Let me elaborate. I hate watching someone wrestlefuck someone else for 3 rounds, it's beyond boring. My point is when you fight someone like say Anderson Silva who has some of, if not the best striking in MMA, it's your goal to not get KTFO'd. Fighting an elite level wrestler, it's your job to not get taken down.
I'm sure I'll hear "you try and stop them from taking you down" arguments. Granted they can execute a perfect double leg in their sleep, it's a lot easier to learn how to stay off the fence and sprawl or defend a takedown than it is to learn a lifetime of nuances in takedowns.

It's strange that they'll cut Shields and Fitch and refuse to sign Askren, but then they'll keep signing or keep giving fights to other horribly boring fighters who aren't even that good, certainly not proven elite like those others.
They sign them because sometimes they develop into well-rounded monsters. Just look at guys like Rashad Evans, Josh Koscheck, and Tyron Woodley. They were all criticized for being boring blankets before they sorted out the rest of their MMA skills and became highly entertaining championship level fighters.

Askren, Fitch, Shields are expensive

Bring back headbutts. Wrestlers = no longer boring ;)
Learn takedown defense, as stated. It's not like grappling just appeared out of nowhere, and people are struggling to cope with some new and mysterious strategy.
Boxing already exists as a sport, along with various other striking sports. MMA requires, or should, being able to handle grappling.
